Good morning,
This month we have been focusing on Voluntary Local Reviews (VLR) which are very important monitoring tools for SDG implementation at city or regional level. The process of SDGs localization that starts with the VLR allows local a regional governments to identify their own priorities and territorial assets. The Local Development Unit is currently working on VLR guidelines both at national level (Italy) and international level (for UN-Habitat).

What is a Voluntary Local Review and why is it important for the SDGs Localization?
The Voluntary Local Review (VLR) is an analysis of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for a specific local context, thus, a very important monitoring tool for their implementation at city or regional level. When it combines a careful analysis of indicators with a participatory process that involves citizen and local stakeholders and a coherence analysis of existing policies as a basis for planning and policy design it also becomes a strategic planning tool.
A comparative review of existing Voluntary Local Reviews (VLR) guidelines
UN-Habitat engaged the expertise of the Local Development Unit to conduct a global research initiative on multilevel governance and SDG localization. As part of the research, ARCO carried out a desk analysis to gain a comprehensive overview of the current VLR guidelines, emphasizing their shared elements, distinctions, and unique characteristics. This aims to provide a clear understanding of the diverse recommendations on executing an impactful VLR more effectively.
