Vizhinjam Port: Pioneering India's Transshipment Future
India's first transshipment port situated at Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram being developed adani ports and special economic zone and Government of Kerala in Public Private Partnership model (PPP) aimed at being more effective and cost efficient . Given the strategic importance of the location of the port being on par with the important international shipping route between suez canal and strait of malacca
Given the infrastructure development on National Highway 66 from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasargod makes transport and other logistics related to the movement of containers easy to other ports in India ( 230 Km away to kochi , 644 km to Mangalore ). India used to depend on major transhipment ports like Jebel ali ,Klang and singapore ports . Vizhinjam ports expects to the change the foreign dependency of Indian ports by making vizhinjam a transhipment hub . There is also a transhipment port in vallarpadam terminal , kochi operated by Dubai Ports World ( DP word) but with a limited handling as compared to the vizhinjam .
Apart from the strategic location Vizhinjam port should also show operational efficiency to be attractive in the transshipment port sector. The port also having the advantage of being semi automated puts it at a better place .
