Visualize/Analyze Progression of COVID-19 (Part 2 of 2)

Transcending time and space, Many countries across the world have long equated patriotism with armed forces. But none of the armed forces in the world, can put an end to these times of distress by shooting the virus down. This leaves Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists and other caregivers in our health care system as front line soldiers saddled with unfathomable tasks, and compounded by an increased risk of contamination and death they never signed up for. All the Strength and Power to our health care workers, our new armed forces.

While My previous article focused on visualizing/observing the progression of COVID-19 across all the major countries in the world to study the reasons for effective containment of the epidemic across a few countries, the main focus of this article is to visualize the progression of COVID-19 in the US and find evidence to the observed positive correlation between effectiveness in Containment and the Number of COVID-19 tests offered per 1 million people. A secondary objective is to visualize the progression of COVID-19 in the US and get a sense of our path back to normalcy.

Evidence for Correlation

To find evidence for a positive correlation between effectiveness in Containment and the Number of COVID-19 tests offered per every million people, the below visualization helps us understand the progression of COVID-19 cases each day after they crossed 50 confirmed cases.

The progression of COVID-19 in the US when compared to other countries like Iceland, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and especially South Korea who offered a higher number of tests for every million people as per the below chart referenced from https://ourworldindata.org/covid-testing, provides enough evidence and asserts the correlation that exists between the number of tests per million people and effectiveness in containing the epidemic. Thankfully FDA has approved 13 different types of COVID-19 diagnostic tests as of 03/22/20, in the US. Slowly but steadily I hope these measures will increase the number of tests offered per million people and start showing an impact in flattening the curve.

Visualize 5 dimensions

Before diving into visualizing COVID-19 progression in the US, we will explore how to visualize 5 dimensions with Active cases, Deaths & Recovered on the 3 axes, Confirmed cases as the size of the bubble and Date as the animation frame for all the countries affected by COVID-19.

Progression of COVID-19 in the US

Inline below are some of the visualizations explored in my previous article to track the progression of COVID-19 in the US.

Summary

Hopefully, in the coming few days and weeks, the resilience and resolve we are showing will come to fruition and we will start seeing the curves flatten with our lives returning to normalcy. Until then lets root for our new armed forces i.e., our Doctors, Nurses and other health care workers.

Great analysis. It would be interesting to really know if COVID-19 cases are truly leveling off or declining in China. It appears they provide information they want the world to know that may or may not be the complete story.
