Visualize Your Future Self

Have you ever been asked what advice you would give your younger self? Think about how you have or would answer. Would you maybe offer some wisdom about what not to worry about? How you may have better spent your time? What relationships didn’t serve you? What opportunities you may have benefited from?

Unfortunately, no one I know has access to a flux capacitor or a DeLorean, let alone uranium. So, our younger self may not get to benefit from our pearls of wisdom. We can, however, take action in the present and may even be able to benefit from our future self.

I’m not talking about “The Secret” or manifestation. I’m talking about actually visualizing yourself, imagining the version of you that has accomplished the goals you currently want to accomplish. Imagining how they want to feel. And when you focus on those positive feelings, you can benefit in all sorts of ways.

Some questions you can ask your (current) self about your (future) self:

  • How does the version of me that has accomplished (insert your goal here) show up?
  • What habits do they have?
  • What decisions are they making?
  • How do they handle conflict?
  • What’s their morning routine?
  • How do they dress?
  • How do they carry themselves? (Think posture and demeanor when entering a room)
  • Who’s in their circle of trust?
  • How do they handle disappointment?
  • What goals do they have?

Start by thinking about what you want to achieve in your career.?What kind of impact do you want to make? What kind of work do you want to do? Who do you want to be working with?

Once you know what you want to achieve, start to imagine yourself achieving it.?See yourself running a company. Imagine yourself giving a TED Talk. As you're visualizing your future self, focus on the positive feelings. How do you feel when you're helping others? How do you feel when you're achieving your goals?

Keep visualizing your future self on a regular basis.?The more you visualize, the more you'll start to believe it's possible. And the more you believe it's possible, the more likely you are to make it happen.

Visualizing your future self is a powerful tool that can help you achieve your goals and live a more fulfilling life. When you take the time to imagine yourself as the person you want to be, you are essentially programming your brain to work towards that goal.

There are multiple benefits to visualizing your future self:

Clarifies Your Goals

Visualizing your future self helps bring clarity to your goals. By picturing yourself achieving specific milestones, you create a vision that can serve as a North Star. This mental image helps you to set clear objectives and figure out the necessary steps to reach them. When your goals are defined, you become more focused, motivated, and committed to turning your vision into reality.

Boosts Motivation

Our minds are inherently driven by visual images. When you vividly visualize your future self, experiencing the emotions, achievements, and rewards associated with success, you kickstart a surge of motivation. By consistently visualizing your future self, you maintain a high level of motivation and stay inspired to work towards your aspirations.

Enhances Self-Confidence

Visualizing your future self helps you develop self-confidence. When you can see yourself accomplishing your goals and overcoming challenges, you start to believe in your abilities. This confidence shines through in your actions, decisions, and interactions, positively influencing your overall demeanor. As your self-confidence grows, you become more resilient, adaptable, and open to embracing new opportunities. You start acting from a place of abundance vs scarcity, meaning you show up more confident vs insecure or from a place of desperation.

Develop Resilience

Life is filled with obstacles and setbacks. By imagining yourself overcoming hurdles and staying committed to your goals, you strengthen your mental and emotional resilience. This practice helps you develop the ability to bounce back from failures, learn from setbacks, and maintain a positive outlook even in challenging times.

Facilitates Effective Decision-Making

When you have a clear vision of your future self, making decisions becomes easier. By aligning your choices with your desired outcomes, you can evaluate options based on their relevance to your long-term goals. Visualizing your future self acts as a compass, guiding you towards decisions that will support your growth and lead to the realization of your aspirations.

Increases Personal Accountability

Visualizing your future self creates a sense of personal accountability. When you have a mental image of the person you aspire to become, you become more committed to your actions and behavior. This heightened sense of responsibility drives you to consistently work towards your goals, take ownership of your choices, and stay accountable for your personal growth.
