Most mental health professionals are aware of the power that visualization can have on coping with psychological diagnoses, such as anxiety and depression – but it can also be used in our everyday lives.
What is visualization?
It’s an imaginative process that can influence your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It involves using sensory information and the imagination to simulate experiences and situations that feel real, despite not being physically present.?
The more vividly a person imagines something, the more likely it is that they believe it’s real, according to a study by University College London researchers.
Visualizing yourself achieving a goal, acting in a certain way, or rehearsing a task/movement are techniques that can help us create our desired reality.?
Skeptics might think this idea of manifesting our own reality sounds a bit too New Age, but the proof is in the research – not to mention all the successful people who have greatly benefited from it personally.
The Basketball Experiment ??
In this 1996 study, participants were divided into three groups.
The first group was told to practice free throws, the second group was told to visualize that they were making successful free throws, and the third group was told to do nothing.
The first group improved their free throw success rate by 24%, the second group improved by 23%, and the third group didn’t improve at all.?
??The group that only visualized the act of throwing basketballs improved by almost exactly the amount as those who actually practiced throwing them.

Benefits of visualization:
?? Increased confidence
?? Increased motivation
?? Reduced stress and fear
Here are some visualization techniques for you to try out:
Mental rehearsal ??
You can conduct mental rehearsal by imagining that you're confidently completing a task. This may also help goals feel more realistic and achievable.
?? Envision yourself sitting across from your client, the room bathed in soft light, creating a safe, warm atmosphere. As your client shares their thoughts, imagine yourself listening intently, nodding, and responding with empathy and precision in English. You articulate questions and insights with clarity, facilitating a productive and insightful session.?
This visualization prepares you to remain calm, ensuring that communication flows smoothly, even when delving into complex emotional territories.
Affirmations ???
Affirmations are statements that illustrate your desired outcome from the perspective that you've already achieved it. It's important to use positive language when you create affirmations to help you maintain your attitude and motivation.?
?? "I'm confident when offering therapy sessions to English speakers. I accept that I may struggle with a word or concept, and I enjoy the process of expanding my knowledge and connecting with others”
Vision boards ???
You can create a digital vision board or make a physical one out of printed images, magazine clippings and glue. Select images that represent your goals and make you feel inspired. When you're done, place your vision board somewhere you'll see it frequently, such as at your desk.

Imagine yourself as someone else ??
Another technique you can use is imagining yourself as someone you respect. Think of people who represent the type of career or skills you’s like to have, or the goals you want to achieve, and imagine yourself as them.?
?? If I’m feeling shy about speaking in another language, I think about what my extroverted mother would do in that situation … true story!???
Visualization triggers??
These are sensory cues that remind you to visualize.
For example, you could train yourself to associate a certain music playlist with completing tasks that help you work toward achieving your goals. Then, every time you turn on the playlist, you can immediately enter a positive and productive mindset.
Imagine success ??
This simple technique involves visualizing yourself achieving your definition of success, and it can help you feel more confident and motivated to work toward your goals. To make this technique as effective as possible, try to include as many details as you can.
Journal ??
Write about your goals, frustrations, plans and anything else on your mind. This can be especially useful when done in a target language. To help you think of journaling topics, you can use prompts like:
Letter from your future self ??
Imagine you’re the version of yourself that you want to be in the future.?
Write a letter describing your life and what you've achieved. This visualization technique can help you get into a successful mindset and motivate you to build the career and lifestyle that you aspire towards.

Quick tips for using visualization effectively ??????
? Daily practice - Incorporate visualization into your daily routine. Spending just a few minutes each day can significantly impact your confidence and linguistic expression.
? Incorporate all your senses - What does the room smell like? What sounds are in the background? How does your voice sound? The more detailed your visualization, the more real it feels, enhancing its effectiveness.
? Positive reinforcement - Always conclude your visualization with a positive outcome. This reinforces the belief in your ability to succeed and gradually rewires your brain to approach these situations with confidence rather than fear.
? Seek feedback - After real-world interactions, reflect on your performance compared to your visualizations. Celebrate successes and identify areas for improvement, adjusting your visualizations accordingly.
Visualization is not a magical solution but a tool to be sharpened over time.
For non-native English-speaking mental health professionals, it offers a path to overcome language-related anxiety and boost confidence in their roles – touching lives across linguistic barriers.

7 个月I can vouch for the power of visualisation. I'm writing this from my hospital bed as I recover from major surgery to remove a massive tumour from my pelvis ( why I've been relatively quiet here the past 8 months). Visualisation has been key to my recovery process, for example, visulising myself walking to the end of the corridor prior to attempting it. I would also use it prior to therapy sessions with clients as part of grounding myself. I enjoyed reading your article.
