A Visit to Teresina, Piauí
In the heart of Brazil, Piauí is emerging as a symbol of transformative leadership and innovation. Despite being one of the poorest regions in the country, Piauí's new governor, Rafael Fonteles, and his close ally, Washington Bandeira, the Minister of State Education, are spearheading a movement that promises to revolutionize the state's future. Invited by InvestePiauí, we, representatives from Framingham State University and Framingham Public School System, had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the ambitious vision these young leaders have for their region.
The Vision of Governor Rafael Fonteles
Elected in 2022, Governor Rafael Fonteles is a young, dynamic leader from the Workers' Party. His passion for education and unwavering commitment to revaluating Piauí is truly inspiring. Acknowledging the brevity of his term, Rafael is determined to leave a lasting impact. His strategy involves empowering the people of Piauí, particularly those struggling to secure even a single meal a day, by transforming them into future entrepreneurs.
The Role of Washington Bandeira
At the core of this vision is a radical overhaul of the education system. Washington Bandeira, a former prosecutor who left his position to support Governor Rafael Fonteles, shares this commitment to transformation. Graduating together with top degrees, Rafael and Washington are not only good friends but also united in their mission to build Piauí's future. Starting next year, all schools in Piauí will shift to full-time schooling. This bold move aims to provide students with a comprehensive education, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Learning from Global Models
Rafael and Washington have left no stone unturned in their quest to bring world-class innovation to Piauí. They have studied and adopted best practices from leading global examples. Their visits to Estonia, Singapore, South Korea, and Massachusetts have helped shape their approach to digital governance and technology integration. They have forged partnerships with prestigious institutions, including MIT, to incorporate cutting-edge methodologies and technologies. They selected Framingham as a pilot region and our system as a pilot model to collaborate in innovation, entrepreneurship, international business, tourism, and technology.
The Innovation Center
A cornerstone of their vision is the establishment of an innovation center. This facility aims to be a hub for creativity and entrepreneurship, fostering a new generation of leaders who can drive Piauí's economy forward. By investing heavily in their people, Rafael and Washington hope to create a sustainable model of development that continues to flourish long after their terms in office. Victor Hugo Almeida, a key member of the Governor of Piauí's cabinet and President of Investe Piauí, plays a crucial role in attracting investments to the state. His extensive background in economics and experience with international programs make him a valuable asset to the team led by Governor Rafael Fonteles. Almeida's appointment is part of a broader strategy to enhance the state's economic development and investment potential.
?A Model for the Future
In a world where political leadership often faces criticism, the example set by Rafael and Washington is both refreshing and encouraging. Their dedication to their vision and their people underscores a new kind of leadership that prioritizes long-term impact over short-term gains. Their efforts are not just about changing Piauí but about setting a precedent for other regions to follow.
Our Visit
We had a chance to visit the hub and witnessed the opening ceremony with Rafael and Washington. We had discussions? about "Made in Piauí" products and branding in the global market, especially in the US. The impact of infrastructure on tourism, particularly eco and gastro tourism, was also highlighted. We were impressed by the high-tech investments, including sustainable energy. We had one-on-one meetings with the education department and worked on specific projects such as student and professor exchange, workshops, and business consultations.
We participated in the opening ceremony of the campus party, which was more like a technology fair for young entrepreneurship, aiming to shift their vision to the future of the world starting at a very early age. In his speech, Rafael claimed it was one of the biggest parties of its kind. He emphasized that while the private sector is often seen as the leading force in innovation, their state aims to change this approach with state-supported projects. He also set a fascinating goal, announcing a plan to send 50 students abroad as part of his project in the first year, with aims to increase to 100 in 2025, 200 in 2026, and eventually reach a thousand students annually.
