Vision Zero, McGuinness Blvd., Bike Month
Transportation Alternatives
Transportation Alternatives is your advocate for bicycling, walking and public transit in New York City.
New York City’s repeated failures to bring basic street safety infrastructure to all neighborhoods of New York City has deadly consequences.
Traffic crashes killed 51 people during the first three months of the year, including nine bike riders — the most riders killed in the first quarter under Vision Zero — according to our latest analysis with Families for Safe Streets.
We know how to make streets safe for all New Yorkers: smaller vehicles, slower speeds, protected bike and bus lanes, automated enforcement, and better street design.
We cannot afford inaction. We need lawmakers in Albany to pass the full SAFE Streets Act, including Sammy’s Law, this session. In New York City, our leaders need to pass legislation that would streamline the construction of new bike lanes and allow the public to report blocked bike lanes, bus lanes, and crosswalks.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
Sammy’s law was not included in the final New York State budget. The Assembly cut lower speed limits for New York City from the state budget, but we’ll keep fighting this session until we finally give the City of New York control over its speed limits. Keep making phone calls to Speaker Heastie, and send a message in support to your lawmakers.
Bike Month is underway! Our annual celebration of cycling has begun, and we’re out in the field giving out swag, snacks, and other giveaways. Learn more about our commuter stations Thursday evening , and be sure to sign up for our Bike Month challenge .

TWO THINGS TO DO
Testify in support of a safe McGuinness Boulevard. After nearly two years of advocacy work and the announcement of $39 million in capital funding, DOT is finally revealing their plan for a redesign of McGuinness at 6:30 p.m. this Thursday . Sign up for public comment .
Choose your own adventure! We have plenty of events this weekend. Help clean up Bank Street on Staten Island. Pitch in and stick around afterward for a press conference where we’ll call upon the city to restore full public access to Bank Street. Or if you’re in Queens, join us for an independent bookstore ride kicking off in Astoria. Or join our Brooklyn committee for a ride and rally to Fix Fourth Avenue .?
ONE ACTION TO TAKE NOW
Show us your vision for New York City streets! Create a vision of your neighborhood with whatever skills and materials you have. This could be a drawing of the next Open Street, pedestrian plaza, or bike lane you want to see — or a short video explaining what you want! Send a photo of your creation or a very short video this week (no longer than 5-7 seconds) to 7cinema.wetransfer.com .
