?? A Vision for Open Sourcing AI: Aligning Stanford's Insights with the EU AI Act ??

I firmly believe that open sourcing foundation models is key to preventing AI technologies from being controlled by a few, paving the way for prosperity for all.

This vision was further reinforced after analyzing Stanford's "Governing Open Foundation Models" (Read Here) and the EU AI Act (Read Here).

The Stanford document I discovered via Bart de Witte's Post. A bit unfortunate, that it only came out a week after the EU AI Act was finalized.

You can upload PDFs to ChatGPT to analyze and compare the documents. While the results should be taken with a grain of 'hallucination salt', the AI's summarization capabilities are their strong suits and brought out solid, actionable recommendations.

  1. Broader Engagement and Collaboration: The Stanford document encourages active engagement with a wide range of stakeholders, including civil society, to understand the diverse impacts of AI. The EU AI Act could potentially enhance mechanisms for broader stakeholder engagement in AI governance.
  2. Research and Innovation Support: The Stanford recommendations underline the importance of supporting research and innovation while managing risks. The EU AI Act could emphasize more on fostering innovation in AI, especially in open foundation models, to ensure that regulations do not stifle technological advancements.
  3. Flexibility and Dynamism in Regulation: Given the rapid evolution of AI technologies, the Stanford document suggests that governance structures should be adaptable. The EU AI Act might benefit from incorporating more dynamic regulatory mechanisms that can quickly respond to new developments in AI technology.
  4. Global Cooperation and Harmonization: The Stanford recommendations highlight the need for international collaboration in AI governance. The EU AI Act could strengthen its focus on international cooperation to create a globally harmonized regulatory environment for AI.

Solid recommendations: I feel in general the EU should do a better job of a broader stakeholders engagement in all what they are doing.

Super important is to make sure that the EU regulations are not stifling smaller company's innovation in the field. This is the opportunity for Europe to be the bastion of Open Source and collaborative development of these Foundations Models. Something I can't wait for Bart de Witte to address soon regarding the final EU AI Act.

How regulatory processes keep up with the pace of accelerated change needs to be addressed as well.

Europe can't do it alone we need to be collaborate internationally too.

How can we better align global AI governance with the swift evolution of technology?
