A Vision for the Future of Veterans: AI-Driven Solutions for Veteran Suicide Prevention

That’s why we’re teaming up with Commure on an ambitious initiative to integrate advanced AI tools into the VA’s existing suicide prevention programs. This concept reflects a bold and innovative way to rethink how we care for those who have served our country.?

Understanding the Need?

Suicide among Veterans is a national crisis, with devastating consequences for individuals, families, and entire communities. Veterans often face unique challenges—service-related trauma, physical injuries, and the tough transition to civilian life—that can increase their risk of mental health struggles.?

The VA has made significant strides in addressing this issue, with programs like the Veterans Crisis Line and expanded mental health services. Yet, barriers to care remain. Stigma, logistical hurdles, and a lack of awareness prevent some Veterans from seeking help. Meanwhile, overwhelmed healthcare providers need additional tools to keep pace with rising demands.?

The numbers are staggering:?

• More than 6,000 Veterans die by suicide each year, accounting for a disproportionate share of suicides nationwide (VA 2022 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report).?

• If current trends continue, mental health and suicide-related costs for post-9/11 Veterans could reach $900 billion by 2050 (Costs of War Project).?

Beyond statistics, this is about people—Veterans who deserve better support and communities grieving preventable losses. To truly address this crisis, we need new approaches to reach and care for Veterans, ensuring they get the help they need, when they need it.?

Our Proposed Solution?

ReefPoint Group and Commure aim to develop an AI-driven platform that enhances suicide prevention efforts within the VA and community care settings. This solution would focus on three key components:?

• Commure Engage: An AI-powered communication tool that automates outreach and provides tailored support pathways, such as mental health surveys, appointment management, and personalized resources.?

• AI-Powered Clinical Documentation: A natural language processing tool designed to assist clinicians during patient interactions by autonomously documenting key details and offering actionable recommendations.?

• Integrated Insights: A seamless connection to the VA’s Electronic Health Records (EHR) system, ensuring real-time data flow for comprehensive monitoring and decision-making.?

This initiative is designed to reduce the administrative burden on clinicians, expand access to care, and ensure Veterans are supported proactively and compassionately.?
