Vision & Faith
Thanks to the incredible work Paul Andrews is doing I had the pleasure of speaking at the "Family Business United" conference in Glasgow last week.
And the privilege of sharing the stage with family business expert and advisor Mairi Mickel .
We were speaking about ‘Vision’ and its importance in unifying, inspiring and empowering business.
During a coffee break, I was asked:
"What’s the one thing that makes the difference between realising a vision and not realising it?"
After a moment’s reflection, I answered:
Faith.
What I meant when I said 'faith' was the willingness to remain convicted in and loyal to a picture of an as yet unrealised reality.
And I mention 'willing' and 'loyal' because we're always free to choose.
I also use the word 'convicted' rather than confident because confidence can be shaken. And belief can be shaken too.
Conviction, however, is rock solid.
Fatih enables us to give ourself up completely to our Vision; regardless of circumstances, appearances or perceived obstacles…
And yes, we may have our wobbles and doubts and there will be challenges on the path but when we have faith, we remain true regardless.
And when we remain true, it's enjoyable and rewarding.
Faith keeps us true and it also ensures our vision will unfold and be realised... no matter what.
After I'd said 'faith', the same person asked me a second question:
“So what enables faith?”
What a great question!
I considered saying it’s ensuring our vision is for what we’d really love and not just for what our mind is telling us we should want or is possible or will bring us greater peace.
I considered saying it’s the understanding of what imagination actually is vs. what it’s commonly perceived to be.
But what I said was:
Love.
Because when we’re truly in Love with an ideal, faith is automatic.
When we're in Love with an ideal, we're courageously* moved over, through and past doubts, fears and obstacles.
Because Love always transcends obstacles and difficulties.
In contrast to when we're living from fear or resisting obstacles.. which only holds them in place or puts more of them in our way.
As we finished coffee and moved back into the room, I was re-minded of the irony.
We always have our faith in something.
But, if we’re being led by the mind and not by our heart, our faith is all too often in our doubts and fears or in perceived obstacles.
I then considered that Love and Faith are actually inseparable.
Because when we’re really in Love with a Vision and we're actively loving it, all the faith we ever need comes with it.
It's built in.
And so is knowing what to do next.
With our mind and intellect out of the way, our intuition flows.
It then struck me that all we ever need to realise any Vision we'd Love is our willingness to Love it.
And that 'Love' is really the answer to both of the questions I'd just been asked.
There is no why for Love.
And when our Vision is for the Love of it, we can't help but win!
*The root of the word courage is Cor - Latin for Heart... originally meaning 'to speak one's mind by telling all one's heart."
