A Vision for Climate Progress
This week’s New York Times piece from David Wallace-Wells was a bit of a relief for those of us working to avert climate catastrophe. In contrast to his bleak 2017 report on the worst-case-scenarios of climate change, his new article notes the remarkable progress we’ve made in a few short years to avert disaster. Global political mobilization, investment and innovation in renewables, and people’s growing awareness have all begun to pay off. Nevertheless, he warns that we’ve still passed tipping points that mean there is much environmental tragedy to contend with and adapt to.?
And those tragic impacts are being felt in the here and now.?
The latest global data from our partners at GlobeScan finds the younger generation is experiencing the worst effects of the climate crisis. “As a consequence, young people are growing impatient with incremental change,” says BBMG’s Raphael Bemporad in the latest episode of our podcast. “What they're looking for is brands to bring perspective, leadership, energy, resources, and influence to be part of the change that they seek.” They want to see action, now.
As corporate leaders from around the world gathered last week at the annual Sustainable Brands conference in San Diego, the theme was “Recenter & Accelerate” with a focus on turning ideas into action. We had the opportunity to share the latest next gen data from our collaboration with GlobeScan, our Five Paradigm Shifts to Thrive in a World in Flux, and to facilitate a panel discussion with next gen leaders in sustainability.?
It’s our hope that the emphasis on the urgency of the crisis and the motivation of youth to help take action will reach the C-suite of the companies that have the power to affect real systems change. As our friend Sally Uren from Forum for the Future said on stage last week, “There is no business on a dead planet. We need to rethink the economy.”
Rock on,
The BBMG Team
“A big false choice is leading with profit or impact. There is no business on a dead planet. We need to rethink the economy.”
