August is Visibility Month
During the month of August, we’re diving into a topic that I find both exhilarating and intimidating: VISIBILITY.
I’ve been in the trenches of small business ownership for twenty-plus years and know first-hand the roller coaster of emotions that most of us experience with standing in the spotlight. I wish I could say that I ??standing up at networking events and reciting a 30-second introduction or having my picture taken or taking the stage at various events. The truth is that I know how to hide and not be seen or heard.
It Takes Courage to be Visible
Briefly: early in life I learned that being quiet and invisible was a great way to avoid my Dad’s anger. This cocoon of silence and behind-the-curtain behavior served me well for many years… until it didn’t. It took huge courage to leave that safety net to find my voice and speak up.

I experienced such anxiety about drawing attention to myself and my business that I often found excuses not to attend networking events or other forms of visibility. Yet, I knew that no one else was going to be the face of my business. A faceless business is invisible. To market my business effectively, I had to show up and stand up. Finally, I pulled up my big girl pants and stepped out from behind the curtain.
