Virtual Wards: PHL Youla shortlisted for Forward Healthcare Award
We are proud to announce that PHL’s Virtual Ward Service, ‘Youla’ has been shortlisted for a Forward Healthcare Award, for ‘Best Use of New and Emerging Technologies’.
PHL Youla?is a Virtual Ward project that has independence through innovation at the heart of their mission, aiming to allow people as they age to stay in their homes. This Virtual Ward utilises the latest technology, placing sensors around the home which monitor movement and activity throughout the day combined with medical observations to understand what normal looks like and also when normal changes and a person may require intervention.
PHL Youla is supported by a 24/7 clinically led contact centre, giving users constant access to clinical support pathways. PHL Youla provides a proactive monitoring service, learning behaviours of individuals and tailoring the care package to ensure the correct level of support is delivered.
Our service includes access to an online dashboard, allowing family members to monitor behaviours and update information following visits to the monitored patient to ensure the service is as up to date and accurate as possible.
Once a patient has been accepted on to the service, an installation is completed by a fully trained and vetted team member. A total of 6 sensors are installed in an individual’s home, these consist of 3 movement sensors, 2 door sensors and 1 smart plug. Upon completion the patient will receive a daily call over a period of 14 days to better understand the individual and their requirements, in conjunction with this, the sensors will learn the behaviours of the individual.
A recent pilot ran over the past 2-years produced the following feedback :

How PHL Youla Impacts Patient’s Lives
In one example of our proactive monitoring, a service user was frequently in and out of hospital before signing up to Youla.?Since being on the program, having daily observations taken and calls made, he has not returned to hospital. Proactive conversations with his GP have allowed for swift deployment of medication and signposting when required. He has also stated the following with regards to the service:
“The calls show that they care, I always feel like they are on my side and I feel good when they call.”??
