Virtual Reality - How real is it and How will it impact our Future!

Well, I have been busy with my Cloud role, enabling clients and other cool stuff but here I am as promised to write what I feel is a tech trend or will be a tech trend or is a tech trend, (Choose one :).

Virtual Reality, Yes, Being a Gamer I own a Play station even though I have a Lenovo gaming machine. I just had to appreciate the technology Play station or any gaming console for that matter brings to us. If you are one, like me, you would know where I am going with this, PS launched their VR kit last year and its freaking awesome. I don’t own one yet, of course, because it’s very expensive but I had the first-hand experience with it and I can tell you that I love VR more than I love the actual world itself.

But, what exactly is a Virtual reality? I mean it’s a combination of two anonym – Virtual and Reality. It’s confusing, isn’t it?

Technically, it’s like creating a three-dimensional world using computer technologies. I am not going to bore the few readers that landed on this page with the terms like immersion, telepresence, and haptic system.

For me, VR is basically a technologically advanced product which makes us unaware of our physical surroundings and we take a dive into an environment which feels unreal but still stimulates all our senses. And that, for me is as cool as I can get to augmented reality.

Future in the VR would be the introduction of Touch. I would leave that to the minds that are brilliant than mine and are called Scientists. We still have issues with Latency while you are in the VR but I would strongly vouch for at least the latency and the lag to be eradicated from the planet in the next 10 years.

Coming back to the tech in the VR, The VR systems which are also called VE (Virtual Environment) Systems, Uses the graphics card in your system similar to the one which lets you play GTA V, to project an image on the headset which is two monitors giving us an illusion of depth. Oh yes, they are CRT. The programming language that you would need to write to design a VR software is C# Unity and you need to design two screens (One for each eye). Python will probably sneak in and steal the show in the upcoming years. Your Mathematics should also be on point as there will be a close observation with regards to geometry. Yes, that middle school teacher was right when he said that you can’t do anything without Mathematics. Coding is the way to go if you want to write your own program and change the World. Oh, Or Save the World. There is a lot of other things which are of the same importance as others such as Frame rates, Audio, Videos and a lot of Software testing. Tech futurists expect VR to be mainstream too. By 2025, it is expected to be worth 110 billion USD according to Goldman Sachs.

You will be amazed to know that VR actually is being used before I was even born, since 1990.

The challenge is creating Virtual worlds. No, I am not talking about Virtual Planetary failed games like No man’s sky, Argh! Creating virtual worlds is one thing and creating one which we can adapt to is another. It should also be as realistic as our physical environment. I would also like to see the adaptability of VR in other genres of life and not necessarily just with Gaming.

I mean how cool will it be if I can attend a VMware conference in Barcelona using the VR tech from the Nature reserve here in South Africa.

Hope!

Cheers, for now, Next will be Artificial Intelligence.
