Virtual Reality : Aspirin Vs Vitamin

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Jason Kolb and listening to his startup lessons. Having sold his company to CISCO a few years ago Jason is more experienced and well versed in many aspects of the startup world.

The most important question that Jason asked me during our 1-hour session was “ Is your tech an Aspirin or Vitamin?”. Every startup that is trying to solve a problem should consider the pain points that they are trying to eliminate,a good startup pitch starts there.

Virtual Reality(VR) is maturing from gimmickry / magic shows to a real business case.

At SmarvizX we have a few business cases that have eliminated chronic headaches under 30 secs.

A large heavy machinery manufacturing facility that was spending  thousands of dollars in business class airline tickets now uses VR .Using VR headsets they give a virtual tour of their premises and their factory floor to all their future prospects. The travel is reduced - the presentation is much better and the user experience is orgasmic. To top it all, they brought down cost.Speaking futuristically SmartvizX one day will be able to claim carbon credits for this effort.

A large airline designed each of their Business class lounges in VR and before breaking any ground; took the concept on the road show. The future users of this lounge were given a taste of the experience yet to be materialized. The execs walked thru the lounge , commented on the ambience and enrolled as patrons right on the spot. The lounges will start construction later this year.

Interior designers in this project loved SmartvizX for they have portfolio to showcase 6-8 months in advance before the lounge completes. They have repeat business and more business shrinking the timelines.

In construction industry pain points or the headache is more  obvious. We are not only Asprin there but in a way RedBull - the shot of caffeine that puts the presentation in construction at “presentation advantage” rather than ‘presentation disadvantage’.A large developer based in US complained about how other renderings and tech have failed to do justice in representing the uber cool Hotel Lobby that they have designed.

It took him 30 seconds to decide that Virtual Reality is must have.

Kunal Grover Whatever has been done till now is largely due to efforts of thinkers/innovators still trying to understand VR as a tech (I am talking about content creation space here; not hardware). And whatever has been achieved is already proving its efficacy too. So what I am truly excited about is the time when VR becomes mainstream (and it will). Part of our day to day way of being; part of everything that we do. It has the potential of being as big as the internet. Certainly as big as the mobile phone. We are well and truly on our way. Let me put my Doc Brown hat on again and re-emphasize "where we are going, we don't need roads". Great point you make on carbon credits. My next article (last one was the big overlap between emerging tech and Sci-Fi) is actually about impact of new tech on the environment. New tech can actually kill the need of unnecessary travel and transport (VR certainly has the potential to do that). So less jet fuel burnt; more positive impact on the environment. Will post it soon. *keeps jumping in excitement and falls off chair* Oh well. That's what happens when I start writing about VR! :(
