Virtual Medicine for our Seniors
My mother-in-law lives in a senior living facility. She has a few chronic conditions that are worse periodically and require hospitalization . The housing where she lives has a medical clinic available most days. One day she was not feeling great but not that bad either. We decided she would benefit to have a visit to the in-house clinic for evaluation to see if she needed an antibiotic. Well, the clinic was only open until noon and it was 2 pm. What we can do at this point is either wait to the next day to see someone in the clinic , call 911 or just take her to the ER. She she went to the ER, spent three hours, found to have nothing serious and was sent home. This turned out well but was an unnecessary trip to the ER with all of its costs and risks. Here is an example where a virtual visit would have been helpful.
I am fortunate to be associated with a virtual medicine platform which addresses exactly this situation. Its called Exammed, and it makes meeting the doctor online so easy. We could have had the consultation by just using a touchpad or mobile phone. It is easy to set up and its a simple way of assessing and potentially treating someone utilizing the technology that we all have in our hands every day.
This product would allow a senior to make an appointment with her doctor and for that doctor to determine appropriate next steps.
My mother in law, unfortunately, had to go through the process of being hospitalized for something that could have been handled via a internet link.
If you know of a similar situation where a virtual visit could have helped , let me know in the comments.
And if you would like to learn more please let me know . .

Any lab work or imaging done at the hospital ? I agree with avoiding the costliness and inconvenience of ER for our frail elderly . How do you integrate the labs, etc into Tele medicine visit ?
