Virtual and Augmented Reality in Education: a podcast using Google's NotebookLM

I experimented today to convert one of my modules "Virtual and Augmented Reality in Education" into a podcast using Google's NotebookLM.

Listen to it: Please click here

Important Note: Google’s NotebookLM is primarily a research and note-based generative AI tool. It’s designed to help you understand, summarize, and generate insights from documents you provide. It does not directly record or produce audio content, host podcasts, or manage podcast distribution. Instead, it can assist with the content planning and scripting stages of a podcast production workflow. In other words, NotebookLM can help you refine your ideas, produce scripts, or brainstorm topics before you record and publish your podcast through other dedicated tools.

Below is a step-by-step process showing how you might integrate NotebookLM into your podcast creation workflow:

Step 1: Define Your Podcast Concept

Before involving NotebookLM, clarify your podcast’s concept on your own:

  1. Establish Your Format and Length: Decide whether you’ll produce interviews, solo monologues, narrative storytelling, or panel discussions. Also consider typical episode length (e.g., 20 minutes, 45 minutes, etc.).
  2. Identify Your Audience and Goal: Determine who you’re speaking to and what value you want them to gain.
  3. Pick Your Topic or Theme: Choose a compelling topic for the particular episode you’re developing.

Outcome: You have a clear idea of your podcast concept and goals before moving into script development.

Step 2: Prepare Your Source Material

NotebookLM relies on documents you provide. To get the best results, gather and organize your source materials:

  1. Collect Research and Notes: Compile your research, reference articles, interview transcripts, or any factual data you want to reference into a Google Doc.
  2. Create Summaries and Outlines: Structure this Google Doc with clearly labeled headings, bullet points of key facts, and any rough ideas or questions you want answered.
  3. Check for Readability: Ensure the document is well-organized, as NotebookLM’s ability to help you depends on the clarity and quality of the input.

Outcome: You have a well-structured Google Doc that can be fed into NotebookLM.

Step 3: Access and Open NotebookLM

  1. Go to NotebookLM (Labs): Visit the NotebookLM interface (as of now, it’s a Google Labs project, so you might need to sign up or request access if it’s still in limited release).
  2. Load Your Document: Link your Google account and select the Google Doc containing your podcast research. NotebookLM will read and analyze this document.

Outcome: NotebookLM is ready to process your research material.

Step 4: Use NotebookLM to Generate Ideas and Episode Outlines

Once your source document is uploaded:

  1. Ask NotebookLM for Structure Suggestions: Type a prompt like, “Please outline a 30-minute podcast episode about [Your Topic] based on the provided research.”
  2. Refine the Outline: If the initial outline doesn’t fully meet your needs, ask follow-up questions, such as: “Can you propose a more conversational opening segment?” or “Suggest three potential guest interview questions that would engage listeners.”
  3. Iterate Until Satisfied: Keep refining the episode structure, segment breakdowns, and key talking points until you are confident the show flow is compelling.

Outcome: You have a well-structured episode outline that can serve as the backbone of your podcast.

Step 5: Generate a Script or Detailed Notes

Now that the outline is set:

  1. Create a Draft Script: Prompt NotebookLM with something like, “Using the outline, write a draft script with introduction, transitions, and closing remarks.”
  2. Adjust Tone and Style: If the first script isn’t the right voice or style, say something like, “Make the host’s tone more conversational and energetic” or “Include more storytelling elements in the introduction.”
  3. Incorporate Corrections: Check any factual statements. If corrections are needed, either manually edit the script in the Doc or prompt NotebookLM to revise certain sections.

Outcome: You end up with a near-final script that’s customized for your unique voice and podcast style.

Step 6: Add Personal Touches and Verification

NotebookLM is a helpful assistant, but you still need to add the human touch:

  1. Insert Personal Anecdotes and Unique Insights: Add your own experiences, humor, or personal commentary to the script that NotebookLM might not have included.
  2. Fact-Check and Verify Information: Double-check any historical dates, quotes, or data provided by NotebookLM to ensure accuracy.
  3. Polish the Language: Smooth out any awkward phrasing and ensure transitions between segments feel natural.

Outcome: Your script is now both well-structured and authentically “yours.”

Step 7: Record Your Podcast Episode

With your finalized script in hand, move onto the actual audio production:

  1. Set Up Your Recording Environment: Use a high-quality microphone, a quiet room, and audio recording software (e.g., Audacity, Adobe Audition, or a DAW of your choice).
  2. Read Through the Script: Perform your script, keeping the conversational style and pacing you envisioned.
  3. Edit the Audio: Remove long pauses, fix any mistakes, and add background music or sound effects.

Outcome: You have a fully recorded and edited podcast episode.

Step 8: Publish and Promote

NotebookLM’s role in creating the content is done at this point. Next steps:

  1. Upload to a Hosting Platform: Use a podcast hosting service such as Libsyn, Anchor, Buzzsprout, or Podbean.
  2. Distribute to Directories: Submit to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, etc.
  3. Promote on Social Media: Share snippets, images, and key highlights on Twitter (X), LinkedIn, Instagram, or your newsletter.

Outcome: Your well-prepared, NotebookLM-assisted podcast episode is now live and ready for listeners.

Summary

In short: While Google’s NotebookLM doesn’t create podcasts directly, it can streamline the research, planning, and scriptwriting phases. By using NotebookLM to generate outlines, refine episode structures, and produce draft scripts, you save time and enhance the quality of your content. You then take those materials, record your episode using traditional audio methods, and publish it via standard podcast hosting services. This combined workflow leverages NotebookLM’s strengths as a research and creative assistant, while you maintain full creative control over the final product.
