Fourteen organizations from across the state were recently recognized as the recipients of the 2024 Commonwealth History Fund grants from the VMHC. This year, nearly $400,000 was awarded to support history preservation and education projects throughout Virginia.

There are several key selection criteria to be considered for a Commonwealth History Fund grant, including the significance of the project or resource, its impact on its community and the Commonwealth, the focus on historically underrepresented topics and communities, the need for funding, and the urgency of the project.

Funds can be used for a variety of purposes including preservation, publications, artifact acquisition, research, conservation of artifacts, and educational programming. Eligible recipients include Virginia non-profits, educational institutions, and state-recognized Virginia Indian tribes

Museums, libraries, and community spaces will have access to an exciting new portfolio of traveling exhibitions produced by the VMHC, all designed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American Independence.

In March 2025, the Virginia Museum of History & Culture will debut Virginia’s official commemorative exhibit for the 250th anniversary, Give Me Liberty: Virginia & The Forging of a Nation. This exhibition will highlight the essential Virginia people, events, and sites that helped bring liberty and democracy to the nation. Multiple versions of this dynamic new exhibition will also be made available to travel the state in March 2025, and there will be select opportunities to bring this exhibit to Virginia communities at no cost.

Another marquee exhibition, We the People, will open in March 2026. This exhibition will explore the many people who, over centuries, have made Virginia the unique place it is and in the world and the dramatic impact of the immigrant experience throughout Virginia’s history as people arrived from around the globe.
