July 4th Citizenship Ceremony and Celebration!

Celebrate America by welcoming new citizens at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture’s annual Independence Day Celebration and Citizenship Ceremony. Approximately 75 candidates will be sworn in as newly naturalized citizens during an inspirational ceremony held in partnership with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The ceremony will begin at 11:00 am and is free to attend and open to the public. Following the ceremony, guests are invited to participate in a special July 4th celebration in Commonwealth Hall. Guests can enjoy live patriotic music, an in-gallery scavenger hunt, and Ukrop’s cake (while supplies last) to commemorate the 248th birthday of America. The VMHC Library will also display a selection of rare artifacts to offer a unique glimpse into early America.

VMHC Launches 'Civics Connects'

The VMHC is proud to launch a major, statewide civics education program for middle grade students—a legacy project of the VMHC’s 250th Initiative.

Civics Connects, a first-of-its-kind, comprehensive, classroom-ready resource for Virginia students, is born from years of related work by the VMHC and its John Marshall Center for Constitutional History & Civics (JMC). The program offers a robust array of best-in-class educational tools designed with significant input from Virginia educators at every level and will include lesson plans, interactive slides, classroom activities, and the opportunity to engage with onsite educators, subject matter experts, and special museum experiences. Also, a core feature of Civics Connects will be a series of video shorts that feature Virginia middle schoolers as civics investigators visiting the Virginia Capitol, VMHC, and other important sites around the Commonwealth—and even the National Archives and The White House—on a quest to understand America’s founding documents and world-changing ideas, its principles of democracy, and our collective responsibilities and rights under the Constitution.

Beyond the Bullet Points: Teaching about the American Revolution and Its Legacy

With the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution fast approaching, educators across the Commonwealth will see more emphasis on the events, individuals, and ideals of the Revolution popping up in their classrooms. However, the Virginia Standards of Learning are filled with vague language like “Some American Indians fought alongside the Virginia patriots, while others fought with the British” or “Women took on more responsibility to support the war effort” while not including any named individuals to offer jumping off points to teachers unfamiliar with the content. On Wednesday, July 31, a special workshop will go “beyond the bullet points” by introducing teachers to a diverse cast of people who aren’t mentioned in the standards, but can teach us about the variety of roles that Virginians played in this conflict.

This event is co-hosted by The Valentine and is open to educators of any grade level, though will prove most helpful to those in 4th or above. The workshop is free, and snacks will be provided. The workshop lasts from 10:00am-12:00pm and educators are welcome to explore the rest of the museum in the afternoon.
