In the last two years the vintage and second hand market has grown exponentially and its project to double in the next 5 years reaching $77 Billion.

Resale market is driving the growth and it’s expected to growth eleven times more by 2025 thanks to sellers who put great product into the market.

In 2020 Thred Up estimates the total resellers amount around?52.6 million, this data is anticipated to reach 118.8M in 2025.

Thrifting became a new consumer trend during pandemic which is expected to grow in 2020 33 M consumer bought secondhand apparel for the first time.

76% of those first-time buyers plan to increase their spend on second-hand in the next 5 years.

Second-hand buying environmental impact is minum:

  • ?3.7 Ibs CO2 emission instead for new clothes is 21.1 Ibs,
  • 4.8 KWh of energy demand instead of 38.8 KWh
  • 1.2 gallons of water instead of 78.5 gallons.

Shoppers plan to shift more spend to second hand the any other category

  • 42% of all consumer in 5 years
  • 53% of millennials and GenZ?

It’s also interesting to notice that the demand of new clothing marketed as “sustainable“ will declined respect to the demand of second-hand.

Fast fashion shoppers will switch to thrift?:

  • 2 in 5 thrifters say that they are replacing fast fashion purchases with second hand clothes ?
  • 45% of millennials and Gender Z they refuse to buy from non-sustainable brands and retailers
  • 1 in 4 consumers care less about wearing the latest trends than before the pandemic.


Luxury brands have understood the potential of the second-hand market during the latest years adopting new solutions like:

  • Valentino unveiled its vintage website in collaboration with four selected vintage store worldwide.
  • Gucci launched in September 2021?“Gucci Vault“ a platform where consumers can shop vintage restored branded pieces and new pieces from young designers.
  • Miu Miu launched in 2020 “Upcycled by Miu Miu“ a special collection of vintage dresses ,coming from vintage stores and markets wordlwide, reworked and transformed by the brand.And in April the brand launched a new collaboration with Levi’s dedicated to vintage denim.

Big thanks for sharing Stefano. Great overall yet very accurate vision of this trend. I read this quote from Mr Pinault, CEO of Kering group: "pre-owned luxury is now a real and deeply rooted trend, specially among younger customers (...) this fits naturally with our entrepreneurial spirit, our pioneering sustainability strategy and our modern vision of luxury". Like in digitalization, luxury brands are not the first movers. But they are moving fast now!
