Vineyard Versus Everest

To champion a vision, let’s say in this instance, climbing Everest, you need a completely different level of expertise, intellect, training, knowledge and an ability to go beyond what the mind can conceive.?A great example of this is the 14 Peaks – Nothing Is Impossible documentary on Netflix about the fearless Nepali mountaineer Nimsdai Purja who embarks on a seemingly impossible quest to summit all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks in SEVEN MONTHS, if you have not watched it suggest you include in your next leadership development offsite or watch in your own time for it has to be one of THE most stunning displays of belief beyond comprehension!?The film explores Nepal’s deep connection to high altitude mountaineering through Nim’s eyes as part of his Project Possible quest.?The previous record is just shy of eight years.?With a team of skills sherpa’s, Nimsdai traverses Mount Everest, K2, and other iconic peaks through extreme weather, life or death decisions, and the motional weight of his mother’s illness back home.
The purpose of today’s article in correlation to leadership is this.?If you are hiking to a vineyard, that requires a different skillset.?Basic fitness, hiking boots, back pack, navigation skills and the like.?But the skillset required to climb Everest is completely different, ie mountaineering skills, experienced guides, oxygen, specialised equipment, specific type of fitness training, the list is endless!?In my observation there are a high percentage of organisations that are trying to climb their version of Everest but with only the skillset of hiking to the vineyard – no offence intended!
Take the advent of the Covid 19 pandemic that completely changed the landscape of leadership globally to unprecedented levels.?You would think that the magnitude of this event would have been a big enough awakening for organisations to initiate change and upskill to navigate the terrain of uncertainty now and into the future.?But alas, organisations, in some cases, not all are still operating from the same leadership mindset pre-covid. ??Why do I raise this??I believe there is a critical need to re-evaluate our leadership development plans for the landscape we are experiencing and will continue to experience is a completely different playing field.?We can either see this as a daunting concept or an exciting opportunity to evolve as the world evolves.
To those organisations that have made systemic changes, been proactive and forecasted the need to upskill and pivot I salute you for it takes something.?To those organisations that have gone back to same old same old I urge you to act with a sense of urgency because as Albert Einstein quite rightly said:?We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.?
Food for thought today…

1 年So true, different goals require a different approach. If you stop at just adjusting the goal, but not the roadmap to it you won’t reach that peak. Rethink your preparation and actions beforehand, determine if you’re actually sure you want to go the extra mile and then you’ll succeed. There are no shortcuts.
