VijayaDashmi and the Power of Grit: Ancient Lessons for Modern Success

Coincidence or a sign? LinkedIn popped a video of Angela Duckworth’s TED Talk on grit (Watch Angela Duckworth’s TED Talk on Grit). Duckworth defines grit as passion and perseverance—a concept that resonates with VijayaDashmi, where we celebrate the triumph of good over evil and perseverance over adversity. Lord Rama represents grit, and the Demon King Ravana’s 10 heads symbolically represent external and internal challenges linked to attachment, pride, regret, hate, fear, ego, lust, greed, jealousy, and anger—all obstacles we must conquer to achieve personal and professional success.

I realized how grit and a growth mindset have been essential in my career, specifically when challenges seemed insurmountable. At some point or other, we all experience stress, overwork, timelines, job cuts, stagnation, uncertainty, office politics, and more. I will hold off on my long story for another day; for now, lessons from VijayaDashmi!

The Timeless Grit of the Ramayana

VijayaDashmi is more than Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana—it celebrates perseverance, learning, and resilience. These values align closely with modern concepts of grit and the growth mindset. Let’s explore how a few key characters from the Ramayana embody these traits.

Key Characters Displaying Grit and Growth Mindset

  1. Lord Rama: Perseverance in Action

Rama’s 14-year exile and his quest to rescue Sita demonstrate grit. Despite numerous challenges, his strategic alliances and unwavering focus led to eventual success.

  • Grit: Rama’s tireless pursuit of his goal despite adversity.
  • Growth Mindset: His ability to adapt and learn from setbacks shows the value of seeing challenges as opportunities for growth.

Reflection: When have you faced a challenge that required perseverance? How did you adapt and grow from it?

2. Hanuman: Breaking Barriers

Initially unaware of his full potential, Hanuman’s grit and devotion to Rama unlocked his abilities and led to his success in the mission to find Sita.

  • Grit: Hanuman’s dedication, even when faced with self-doubt.
  • Growth Mindset: His journey shows that embracing challenges can reveal our true potential.

Reflection: What limits have you broken by pushing through self-doubt?

3. Sita: Quiet Resilience

Sita’s unwavering strength during her captivity exemplifies mental fortitude. Despite isolation, she remained resolute and patient.

  • Growth Mindset: Her resilience in adversity reflects deep inner strength and the belief that growth comes through hardship.

Reflection: How have you stayed resilient in challenging situations, trusting that perseverance would pay off?

4. Jatayu: Courage in Sacrifice

Jatayu’s fight against Ravana shows true grit even when knows he will lose. His sacrifice wasn’t for personal gain but for a greater cause.

  • Grit: Jatayu’s relentless stand for righteousness, even in inevitable defeat.

Reflection: Where have you stood up for what’s right, regardless of the outcome?

Ravana: The Danger of a Fixed Mindset

In contrast, Ravana’s downfall is a cautionary tale of ego and a fixed mindset. Despite his intelligence and power, his refusal to learn from mistakes or take advice led to his defeat.?

  • Fixed Mindset: Ravana’s inability to reflect on his errors or change course shows the dangers of rigidity and arrogance.
  • Lack of Grit: While powerful, Ravana lacked the perseverance to evolve beyond his ego.

Reflection: Have you ever let your ego or pride stop you from learning or growing?

Modern Relevance of VijayaDashmi’s Lessons

The Ramayana’s lessons offer profound insights into our lives today. Whether in career or personal growth, grit and a growth mindset are critical for overcoming challenges:

  • Jatayu’s Sacrifice: Grit sometimes means standing up for what’s right, even when success seems unlikely.
  • Rama’s Perseverance: Stay focused and learn from experiences to achieve long-term goals.
  • Sita’s Resilience: Trust that persistence during tough times will eventually lead to success.
  • Hanuman’s Breakthrough: Believe in yourself, push past your limits, and unlock your full potential.

Conclusion:

VijayaDashmi teaches us that grit and a growth mindset are essential to overcoming life’s most significant challenges. The burning effigy of Ravan doesn't only signify good over evil but also an annual reminder of how we need to conquer our own struggles. As you celebrate this festival, ask yourself: How can you apply the perseverance of Rama, the courage of Jatayu, the resilience of Sita, and the self-belief of Hanuman?
