VIJAY DIWAS – 16 DECEMBER:
India celebrates VIJAY DIWAS on 16th December every year to commemorate the Indian Army’s victory over Pakistan in the Indo-Pak War of 1971. On this day, a new county called BANGLADESH was born (then Eastern Pakistan) when the Indian Armed Forces forced the Pakistani Army to surrender in Dhaka. Bangladesh though celebrates its Independent Day on 23rd March.
Late Sheikh Mujibur Rahman served as the first President of Bangladesh and later as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh from 17 April 1971 until his assassination on 15 August 1975.
The file photo shows, signing of the Pakistani Instrument of Surrender by Pakistan’s Lt Gen AAK Niazi along with 90,000 Pakistani troops, in the presence of Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Aurora, then General Officer Commanding Eastern Command. Standing behind from right to left is Maj Gen J F R Jacob, Chief of Staff, Eastern Command and Lt Gen Sagat Singh, then General Officer Commanding 4 Corps and one of the best, rather THE best battlefield commander that modern Indian army has produced so far.
We salute our brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice towards our motherland.
