Viewpoint: I've Been Writing a Lot About Politics Lately

I’ve noticed for the last several weeks I’ve gotten more political. It seems to go in cycles. Sometimes I can’t believe what is going on in politics and feel the need to say something. When I read stories like I did a few weeks ago about a bill co-sponsored by a Pueblo politician to allow individuals to decide if they are male, female, or other, I get a little confused about what our tax dollars are paying for.

I guess the current bill allows for sex change with documentation and going before a judge. The new bill let’s the individual decide what sex they are. That same politician got a Pueblo Chili tattoo that made the front page. Isn’t it cool to live in a state where everything is apparently going so well, we can waste time ignoring reality and promoting Pueblo Chili?

The irony is that Pueblo almost always has the worst unemployment of the major cities, significant crime, and has to fill budget gaps with massive proliferation of pot to pay the bills. Actually, a pot leaf tattoo might be more appropriate. I’m so glad the governor visited, I wonder if he got a tattoo while he was here. Personally, I am really scared for the citizens of Colorado for the next two years.

Anyway, sometimes I get into a cycle where I write about political issues. I have decided that is often a waste of time. Political animals tend not to be swayed by facts, it’s all about feelings. I actually met people, intelligent people, who thought the economy was booming under the prior administration. They are the same people who think the economy is in the toilet right now.

In all honesty I’m pretty disgusted with both political parties. When Obama was in office the Republicans yelled about Obamacare. Now the Republican’s, for the most part, support insurance and health care. Obamacare sucked, but the medical/insurance system in our country still sucks.

Before Trump was elected the Democrats wanted a wall and the Republicans opposed it, generally. Now, with a Republican President the Democrats are yelling about what a horrible thing the wall is and the Republicans tell us we have to have it for national security.

We won’t truly get anything solved unless we quit voting on political lines, and vote on what is best for the American people. Either the medical/insurance system is working well for the American people or it is not. Either we need a wall for national security, or we don’t and whether there is an “R” or a “D” next to someone’s name shouldn’t be the reason we lean one way or another.

I’ll close with another problem and a real-life example. I went into a coffee place and ordered a small cup of coffee. The total came to $3.16. I had a lot of change in my pocket, mostly quarters and dimes. I counted out a dollar and laid it in one pile. A second and third dollar, in a separate pile of change followed. In a final pile I put 16 cents. The cashier needed a calculator to add up the money.

I don’t know what gender he said he was and I didn’t notice any tattoos at all. I did wonder if the government was helping educate him to get him through life.
