VIETNAM'S COMMITMENT TO ACHIEVING SDGs 17

Experts agree that Vietnam must increase its financial resources and improve the efficiency of existing ones to speed up progress towards the implementation of sustainable development goals.

?The Ministry of Planning and Investment, in partnership with the German International Cooperation Organization (GIZ), held a consultation workshop on the Draft National Voluntary Review (VNR). The workshop took place in Hanoi on March 24 and focused on Vietnam's progress in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2023.

Evaluating Progress towards Achieving Sustainable Goals

Dr. Le Viet Anh, Director of the Department of Science, Education, Natural Resources and Environment, Ministry of Planning and Investment, discussed the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during a conference opening speech. The VNR was established to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and SDGs globally. Vietnam presented the VNR for the first time in 2018 and plans to submit it for the second time in 2023, along with 41 other countries.

?According to Mr. Viet Anh, Vietnam will take part in the Voluntary National Reviews (VNR) in 2023. This platform will allow Vietnam to share their accomplishments, progress, challenges, difficulties, lessons learned, and significant activities during the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) implementation process.

Prioritizing investments in infrastructure and technology has led to dramatic improvements in industrial development, increased innovation, and infrastructure construction (Goal 9). Inclusive growth and increased resource allocation for social security by 15%/year contribute to reducing inequality (Goal 10)

Vietnam has made significant progress in achieving several Sustainable Development Goals, including:

  • Poverty reduction, with the multidimensional poverty rate falling from 9.2% to 3.6% between 2016-2022 (Goal 1)
  • Providing clean water for 98.1% of the population and hygienic latrines for 95.6% of the population (Goal 6)
  • Improving industrial development, innovation, and infrastructure construction through investments in infrastructure and technology (Goal 9)
  • Reducing inequality through inclusive growth and increased resource allocation for social security by 15%/year (Goal 10)

In addition to these goals, Vietnam has made very significant progress in improving access to quality education with completion rates of primary and lower secondary education reaching 97.2%, respectively. and 98% (Goal 4). Progress is also seen in achieving universal health coverage (Goal 3) with 91% of the population covered by health insurance. Vietnam has also made great progress in sustainable urban and community development (Goal 11).

Vietnam is well on its way to achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, with notable achievements in several key areas. The country has made significant strides in sustainable urban and community development (Goal 11). Vietnam has also achieved a 97.2% completion rate for primary education and a 98% completion rate for lower secondary education (Goal 4). Moreover, the nation has made impressive progress in providing universal health coverage (Goal 3), with health insurance now covering 91% of the population.

It's worth noting that the percentage of people residing in temporary housing has declined to 1.2% (and 0.3% in urban areas), and 91% of urban solid waste is being collected and treated.

Boosting Performance

To successfully implement the 2030 Agenda, Viet Nam should prioritize the acceleration of Goal 2, specifically addressing malnutrition, especially among children and ethnic minorities.

Viet Nam also needs to accelerate progress in promoting gender equality, addressing gender-based violence and the burden of unpaid care work (Goal 5). More efforts are needed to promote decent work, especially for 56.2% of workers in informal employment, and to maintain inclusive economic growth in the face of global uncertainty (Target 8).
