While International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8th is a global celebration of women's achievements, #Vietnam has a unique tradition of honoring women in October. This month-long celebration, often referred to as Vietnamese Women's Day, is a time to recognize the contributions of Vietnamese women to society and to promote gender equality.
Vietnamese Women's Day: A Celebration of Resilience and Progress
Vietnamese Women's Day, celebrated in October, is a testament to the remarkable progress that Vietnamese women have made in recent decades. Despite facing numerous challenges, Vietnamese women have demonstrated incredible resilience and determination. They have excelled in various fields, from education and business to politics and the arts.
The Importance of knowing our own inner power
Addressing rediscovering Vietnamese women's inner power is essential for building a more equitable and just society. This means providing them with access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. It also means challenging harmful stereotypes and promoting gender equality.
A Personal Journey: From Iaido, Kendo to Boxing
As a martial artist with over many decades years of experience, I've always been passionate about self-discipline and focus. However, my recent journey has highlighted the importance of personal choice and gender stereotype.
I was initially involved in kendo, Iaido, but my progress was hindered by a discriminatory rule that prevented me from taking a kendo exam due to "woman of my age". This experience was disheartening, as it felt like my motivation and capabilities were being dismissed based on arbitrary criteria.
Determined to continue my martial arts training, I decided to join a female leadership boxing club, to stay sharp mentallyand physically as well. This was a transformative decision, as it offered a supportive and empowering environment where I could learn and grow alongside other women.
My own experience with kendo has highlighted the importance of personal empowerment. The decision to pursue a kendo exam should have been mine, regardless of my age/gender. It is disheartening to encounter institutions that limit individuals based on arbitrary criteria.
Teachers and mentors should be supportive and encouraging, rather than discouraging students. They should celebrate their students' dedication and hard work. By fostering a positive and inclusive environment, we can empower individuals to reach their full potential.
A Lighter Atmosphere in Women's Boxing
One of the things that struck me about the women's boxing club was the lighter atmosphere compared to men's boxing clubs. The focus was more on technique and skill development, rather than aggressive competition and the sense of winning a fight. This approach created a more inclusive and collaborative space where we could support and encourage each other.
Leadership and Empowerment
The female leadership boxing club has been a source of inspiration for me. It has taught me the importance of leadership, both within the club and in my personal life. The women in the club are strong, independent individuals who are committed to empowering each other.
Conclusion
Vietnamese Women's Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of Vietnamese women and to promote gender equality. My personal experience joining a female leadership boxing club has highlighted the importance of personal choice, agency, and the power of community. By supporting and empowering each other, we can create a more just and equitable world for all women.
