#ViennaUP’21 – A kind of magic.

During the planning phase for our upcoming startup festival Vienna UP’21, I had some intense discussions with my team as well as with our program partners about the factors that decide whether a business idea succeeds or not.

 Why does a concept that did not work several times in the past, suddenly lead to a success?

Why does one startup fail and another eventually become a unicorn?

What is the decisive ingredient that makes the difference?

 Well, it very much comes down to one thing: Magic.

Do not get me wrong, of course it is of utter importance to work hard, have a profound strategy, prepare a convincing business plan, etc., so to have the rational part of your business activity well prepared. Then again, many startups have done that and still fail.

So, the answer lies not (only) in these hard facts, it’s the sum of soft factors that plays a decisive role: What’s the composition of the team, how diverse are the people involved and their characters, how does the team perform under pressure, how does the startup deal with conflicts and backlashes?

In short, the closest I came to an answer: Diversity (in a team) leads to friction, friction leads to sparks, and sparks lead to magic.

 And magic is exactly the core ingredient we strive to identify, trigger and contain during Vienna UP’21 - the magic to ignite a startup’s engine and accelerate it.

 However, we can only succeed in unleashing magic with the help of everybody involved, be it program partners, officials, participants.
