I was at the train station recently, it was drizzling, it was grey, and although it was practically raining I wanted to create what I refer to as a video-on-the-go...
But.
There I was in London, I had my hat on to keep my head and hair dry, was worried about how I could be perceived to those watching and wanted to share a very short livestream. I had a busy day ahead, and was on my way to a couple of networking events, after that I knew I had to rush back home for a call after those.?
So I didn't have oodles of time!
A few people had been telling me, when it came to being visible, more specifically, when it came to making videos to put themselves and what they do out there, that they felt uncomfortable and self-conscious. They also told me that they'd recorded a ton of video's that had never left their phone or their computer.
So, this weeks Be Seen Bite is for you if in your head you’ve heard yourself say "Hay-eeeeelp (Penelope Pitstop style), I don’t like making videos”, here are just a couple of tips that could get you to break free and just do it!
By the way...
This Be Seen Bite initially started life as an actual video-on-the-go that was streamed to my Facebook personal page (yes, I occasionally share my stuff with my school friends, ex work colleagues and perhaps even more strangely, my relatives, and friends including aunts and uncles, cousins and friends of my parents.
NUGGET TO NOTE: From a visibility standpoint, do that so personally does take nerves of steel, it’s the very thing most of the people I speak to fear and feel self conscious and actually STOP them from wanting to be visible and pressing record.
If you’re a fan of Meta (still Facebook to me), it’s on the Queen of Being Seen public page and also on my YouTube channel so you can watch it there at any time AND it’s short at less than 4 minutes. Watch it here!
First thing to know, especially if you’re newly connected to me on here is to understand why I talk about visibility.
It's because I'm the Visibility Specialist known as "The Queen of Being Seen" and my work is to help employed professionals, business owning CEOs and company founders.
They frequently?need help to be more visible, have struggled to raise their professional profile consistently and worry about the perception of others when putting themselves or their work out there for the whole world to see.?
They often want to look both credible and confident while they're visible in a way that feels articulate.
With video in particular, please know that you’re not just restricted to studio’s, and green screens, perfectly manicured or highly edited video’s.?
So if you don't like shooting video’s, and you feel nervous or anxious about it, here are a couple of things for you to do.?
?? First Tip:?
Think about what you want to say before you say it, before you hit record because if you do that, you won't feel so much like you're rambling, you will have something to guide you and the experience of knowing what you're going to say not rambling or making it up as you go along.?
?? Second Tip:?
Really connect with your why. Now, it’s interesting because I was speaking to a client about this recently, when I say connect with your why, I don't mean read the book, try and work out your purpose and do that on camera.?
I mean, think about why you really love doing the work that you do, as you do that, you?begin to connect to that place (usually) in your stomach, sink into that feeling even as you read this.?

I share this because I want you to be unapologetically visible and allow yourself to know that what you've got to share and What. You. Say. Matters.
Your voice matters, that’s what’s most important to me, within the work that we do.?
?? Third Tip:
Once you've done that, in order to say what you want to say, start first with one point, so that you don't feel overwhelmed or confused while attempting to record your video. Start with that one point first, and repeat this as often as you can, THEN incorporate more.
?? Bonus Tip:
Going back to if you feel really nervous about making videos, in my experience, don’t watch them back. My observation is that you’ll only critique yourself and then stop yourself from posting them out there. I noticed this to be fact, I’ve done this visibility work for long enough 13 years), to have seen this happen time and time again with the people I work with.
Finally get started or restarted and make a video today, focus on your why, why you do the thing that you do, or the key message you want to convey.?
Don't put it off any longer, make a video today!
Do it and let people know why you do what you do it literally takes just a couple of minutes.
If you think video is too time consuming check out my recent video where I share a 20 minute video on how to be visible on video AND save time, I reckon you’ll save an hour minimum.
My mantra and desire for you is that it’s time for you to be seen for you to be heard and for you to be visible because whether you say, it write it or record it.?
Your. Voice. Matters.?

2 年Excellent tips Jenny - everybody assumes I enjoy and am comfortable making videos. This couldn't be further than the truth. As a board director at AWTE (Association of Women Travel Executives), and in my other roles, I know I need to be brave and get on with it!

2 年I love the work you're doing, and I love London, even when it's drizzly. Your tip about thinking/plannng what you're going to say is also good for the audience. People don't have time to listen to someone waffling and rambling while they figure out what they want to say. I always appreciate speakers who respect my time by coming to the point quickly.
