You are finally convinced that video is the way to go. You start shooting, BUT it doesn’t work! Your views are low; your engagement is weak; and no one is sharing your video. I’ve been there…
You may be doing something wrong, and you may not! Afterall, we are bombarded by so much content every day (in fact ~4.6 BILLION pieces of content) that its hard to stand out. Take it easy on yourself!
I’ve learned a few tips along the way, and wanted to share them with you…
10 VIDEO STORYTELLING RULES
Rule #1 - KEEP YOUR VIDEOS SHORT
Grab your audience straight away and don’t lose them by going on and on. Keep your videos to less than 1 minute if possible. If you have long form content, save that for youtube, or chunk your video into different segments
Rule #2 - FOCUS ON THE FIRST 6 SECONDS
This is the time that you have to hook people into what you’re trying to say. Make sure it counts.
Rule #3 - HAVE A STORY
People honestly don’t care about your product promotions. They care about what you stand for and what your story is all about, so make sure you have one.
Rule #4 – BE RELATABLE
Make your content relatable. People engage with what they connect to and with content that adds value to their life, either because it is teaching them something or inspiring them, or entertaining them. You want the person watching your video to feel compelled to share it with someone, and the only way this can happen is if they feel like you are talking about them or if they have a ‘me too’ moment.
Rule #5 - HAVE A CLEAR OBJECTIVE
Ask yourself what you want this video to achieve and make sure that message is clear. Do not do videos for the sake of doing videos or for the sake of putting out one post a day
Rule #6 - DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT
Everyone has covered almost everything there is to be covered, but that doesn’t mean you can’t give YOUR take on it. So, have the courage to be different and unique, even if that means, you’ll fail a few times.
Rule #7 - POST AT THE RIGHT TIME
Timing is KEY. There are certain hours and days for every platform, where content engagement is the HIGHEST. Make sure you know them.
Rule #8 – INCLUDE SUBTITLES
Research shows that many people watch videos on mute as they scroll along their timeline. So, adding subtitles will make it more likely for people to engage with your content because it is accessible.
Rule #9 - HAVE A CALL TO ACTION
Now that you have engaged your audience, don’t lose them. Redirect them to your page or website or engage them by asking them a question.
Rule #10: BE REAL
Look, everyone is already taken out there, so just be yourself and be authentic, cause that always wins in the end. Authenticity requires vulnerability, transparency and integrity. It is about showing your soul, and what you stand for.
Do give these a try, and let me know how it goes. If you find some videos not working, try adjusting your approach or simply recycling your content. Most importantly, don’t give up on video, cause according to a Cisco study, by 2021, 82% of consumer internet traffic will be video, so do whatever it takes to get it right.
What other tips would you share?
Cheers
