Video Tape. A Lesson From History

Video Tape. A Lesson From History

"Last known VCR maker stops production" reads the headline!

With the decline of available VCR's in existence it is likely that a significant percentage of content trapped on obsolete tape formats will never be seen again.

Tape degrades by 10% every decade even under the best conditions. Preserve your tapes today!

Many aspects of our culture from the latter half of the 20th Century which were committed to tape are slowly fading away.

It is estimated that millions of hours of irreplaceable family and production content are at risk of being lost forever. If we do not digitilise now, 50% of that could disappear within just 15 years.

As professional grade tape players and heads become increasingly difficult to source, the process of digitilising tape archives will only become more cost prohibitive.

When we act as custodians of our customers media, we are obliged to offer a long term vision for their content. Not just a preservation strategy.

At Oxford Duplication Centre we offer a variety of solutions, with each geared to support those with low to high technical abilities. From VHS to tape, VHS to digital formats or VHS to cloud we can support all your family and corporate requirements.

At Oxford Duplication we have been managing collections of family, corporate and archive media libraries for over 10 years. What we have learnt during this time is the need to constantly review the technology if we are to avoid cultural and commercial assets from the born digital age becoming irretrievable in just a few decades time.

Thank you to Ian Mottashed for an invaluable insight into his thoughts on VHS.
