Video Projection for Theatre
I grew up doing theatre. I played a rat when I was 6 years old.
I studied theatre in college and my first job in the business was in a college theatre department at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
As I progressed in my career I ended up using my powers for the establishment and began a career in the corporate audio visual industry. But my love for the theatre never faded. In 2001 I was able to produce a four screen video projection design for a version of Pete Townsend's QUADROPHENIA.
In 2015 I began a creative collaboration with Bruce A! Kraemer and Joan Kane to create projection designs for their production company Ego Actus. My first show with them was in 2015 for Penny Jackson's I KNOW WHAT BOYS WANT. The picture above is from that show. Ed Malin in Playwrights on New Plays July 20, 2015 wrote “Jim Marlowe’s projection design brings the internet into the play as a supporting character.”
What began with an attractive woman staring at me at a New Year's party ended up becoming an excellent collaboration with the lovely Heather Massie for her one woman show HEDY! THE LIFE AND INVENTIONS OF HEDY LAMARR. We started working on this show in 2016 and today it is still touring the world. Darryl Reilly on Theatre scene.net June 28, 2017 wrote “The show illustratively begins with film clips of Lamarr with humorous subtitles that are shown on the stage’s back wall. It’s the chief feature of Jim Marlowe’s accomplished projection design.”
On July 23, 2017 HEDY! THE LIFE AND INVENTIONS OF HEDY LAMARR was nominated for the “Outstanding Use of Projections, Special Effects and/or Multimedia Effects” by the Planet Connections Theatre Festivity.
The most recent projection design I created for Ego Actus was for Toby Armour's FREEDOM SUMMER. In The Village Sun June 22, 2023 Claude Solnik writes, "Jim Marlowe’s projections add to the cinematic feel through true time travel."
It is funny to have gone full circle from theatre to projection and back to doing projection for theatre. It is always exciting when you can connect your passions and your interests into one unifying endeavor. I consider myself blessed to be able to do so.
