?4 Steps to Easing Tensions at Home

I was delighted to be a guest on Deborah Kobylt's Live Facebook Series. In these clips we are talking about ways to ease tensions at home right now, with the added stress of being confined to our homes all day, everyday. I hope you find this helpful!

Are you feeling tension in your home? We are.

.

Each of us has had to give up so many things that were a key part of our lives. In my work as a motivation speaker, moreover as a voice coach, I am pivoting and climbing a vertical learning curve as I move to digital. Our favorite physical activities - whether they be exercise, shopping or meeting are curtailed and cabin fever is setting in.

.

There are 4 easy things you can do, to change the anxious energy in your home - change your tone, reframe your words and be patient (breathe).

.

1??Rather than getting aggressive with your kids for being angry they can’t see their friends - feel their anxiety and approach them with love - “I feel your energy, it must be so stressful can’t see your friends right now, that must be incredibly unsettling…” If a member cannot engage in a former daily sport, “this must be so hard for you.”

.

2??Hear THEM, don’t just listen and make assumptions about what they are saying. To be a good communicator, you must first be a great listener - you must hear what someone is truly saying. It is not about us, when we listen, it’s about the other person. Most often it is fear that is at the root.

.

3??Try changing your tone - feel their anxiety. Recognizing theirs, may help you also identify and face your own. Our projections so often come across as aggressive because we have not been able to put a name to it - to tame it.

.

4??Finally breathe. Listen to what they are really saying and breathe into yourself before launching into a response. Things take a moment to resonate at times and silence is okay. Respond with kindness and know underneath every exterior is a sensitive human being that needs love.
