VIDEO: The Nature of Architecture

The Nature of Architecture is the first of a series of six videos from the What Is Architecture? series that attempts to break down the core concepts and fundamentals of architecture itself.

This video was designed to examine architecture from a number of angles and perspectives to help you conceptualize the thinking behind architecture and being an architect.

Whether we're talking about logical architecture such as enterprise architecture or solution architecture, digital architecture such as data or software architecture, or physical architecture such as microchip or industrial architecture, the very concept of architecture follows universal principles and has a profound effect on our daily lives as humans - whether architecture is visible to us, or if it simply exists to apply order and structure to systems and flows.

In "The Nature of Architecture" we start with the intrinsic characteristics of architecture, its universal qualities, and what makes architecture...architecture. We also discuss how architecture can be thought of as both a process, as well as the tangible output of that process.

Thinking like an architect, and applying architectural thinking across organizations and domains, requires taking a holistic view of architecture, with an emphasis on the importance of thoughtful design and implementation.

Your feedback is incredibly valuable as it loops back into future content, so please let me know in the comments what concepts worked for you, what didn't work for you, or maybe even something that surprised you in a good way.

Thank you for watching! Keep an eye out for new videos in the "What Is Architecture?" series as they are released.

I enjoyed this "Back to basics", on systems and the systemic approach ! Thanks for this, Mike Topalovich. This series is starting out well, with a great attention to vocabulary (+a plethora of chosen visuals). I like this look at Architecture as a concept (not only specifically Enterprise Architecture).

Great video. I was thinking how do we wrap this conversation together with Revenue Lifecycle Management. How Architects need to look at the entire revenue lifecycle which has a start and a finish and how to repeat the processes. What most Architects will learn is that most decision makers are creating multi-siloed data models and slowing the growth of their business. Whereas Architects can help use their voice and share better ways to accomplish the same problem but seamlessly integrated.
