Video Interview Tips
Video interviews are pretty trendy if you ask me… all the kids are doing it these days.
Amidst a global pandemic where the UK has been put practically into lockdown, it may seem all doom and gloom for the job market. However, video interviews may just prove to be the silver lining for active or passive job seekers in these indifferent times.
Video interviews have become increasingly popular in recent times. It may surprise you to hear that video interviews really aren’t much different to those that are face-to-face. Here are some top tips to make sure nothing stops you getting your dream job (even in a global pandemic):
Dress to the 9’s… well not quite
Essentially, the video interview will follow the same procedure as a face-to-face interview so why would you dress any differently? Remember, this could be your future employer! So, whilst wearing pyjamas bottoms may feel comfortable, they may put you in the completely wrong mind-set. Imagine, you accidentally awaken to your future employer staring at your dog-printed pyjama bottoms! I mean that’s taking smart casual to a whole new level.
Prepare your surroundings
Surroundings are key. Having a tidy space will help you concentrate on the task at hand. Remember, this is still a formal situation therefore being in the right frame of mind will help you build up a good rapport from the off.
Furthermore, avoid anything embarrassing in the background. The interviewer will see more than you think. Therefore, the smallest distractions in the background could give too much away about yourself. We all have our guilty pleasures, but does your future employer really need to know you’re a JLS superfan given away by the massive poster in the background? It’s brilliant that you do like the boys and will be going to their reunion next year however this is still a professional video call.
This is an interruption free zone
Without meaning to sound like the local cinema, it is imperative that there are no distractions. Whether that’s switching off your telephone, calling a babysitter or turning off background noise make sure that you’re in the right head space for the interview. You wouldn’t want distractions at your onsite interview, so why would a video interview be any different?
Practice makes perfect
Something everyone tells their children at some point in their life... Giving yourself a video interview trial (or many) will help you gage your own body language and help with practice answers. As the interview isn’t face-to-face it is extremely important that you came across engaging. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail!
