Video: Integrated snow chain tech developed jointly by Hyundai and Kia

In a bid to improve the safety of winter drivers, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation have jointly developed patent-pending snow chain-integrated tire technology which incorporates shape memory alloy modules into the wheel and tire assembly.

The companies explained in a press release that the technology will transform the process of installing and removing conventional snow chains on tires during the winter months when drivers require enhanced traction on snowy roads.

Making this possible, the companies explained, is the shape memory alloy modules contained within the wheel and tire, which resemble thick snow chains but are reportedly inconspicuous amid everyday driving.

The companies added that simply pressing a button will trigger an electrical signal that encourages the shape memory alloy to deploy, thereby altering it into the shape of the letter “J.” This subsequently forces the module out of the tire so that it makes contact with the surface of the road and immediately enhances its grip, stability and safety on slick roads.

Eliminating the need for drivers to manually install and un-install traditional snow chains, the jointly developed technology can automate the deployment of the shape memory alloy snow chains during sudden and unexpected snowfalls.

The snow chain-integrated tire technology also features a built-in wear indicator, which offers a visible reminder as the tire surfaces wear down with the appearance of six indented grooves across the tire.

Although Hyundai Motor and Kia Corporation expect to eventually mass produce these tires, they require additional durability and performance tests, as well as regulatory reviews.
