VidCon Value

Reed of the Week

Takeaways from VidCon

VidCon is always one of my favorite weekends of the year. It’s great to see clients, creators, and friends from around the industry. This year things felt different though, and I noticed a number of changes that have me thinking about how the convention has changed post-Covid.

Here are the biggest changes I saw at VidCon:

Banter packed the house as usual

1?? There’s more separation between creators and fans - outside of meet and greets, you won’t see creators roaming the halls or outside hotels

2?? The main conference hall wasn’t as packed as it was in the past - TikTok and swipe content doesn’t create the same level of fandom as long-form

3?? There was a lot more emphasis on growth hacking and optimizing short-form, less talk about just making better videos

4?? The Dream SMP crew is still packing the house - Dream meet and greet and Banter Live were some of the biggest events this year

I realize that conventions change over time—and it should change with the times—but we can’t forget that community and fan interaction was why VidCon became popular in the first place

Great newsletter Reed. #mytwosense 1?? The creator-audience gap is indeed growing. This can partly be attributed to the scaling challenges inherent in the #creatoreconomy. As creators gain more followers, personal interaction becomes more challenging, leading to a more 'celebrity-like' dynamic. Yet, it's important to remember that the intimate, authentic connection between creators & fans is a unique value proposition, so we need to explore new ways to maintain this rapport at scale. 2?? The shift from long-form to shorts like TikTok or Insta Reels reflects changing consumer preferences. People crave snackable content they can consume in brief pockets of time. However, as you rightly note, short-form content often lacks the depth to cultivate a strong sense of fandom. This calls for innovating within the confines of short-form content to establish richer storytelling & deeper engagement. 3?? Growth hacking can indeed drive short-term gains, but it's the quality & uniqueness of content that ensure sustainability. Rather than just focusing on algorithms, creators should continue to hone their craft & develop content that resonates on a human level. After all, content that moves people is what fosters a loyal & engaged community.
