I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies; for the hardest victory is over self." — Aristotle
Dear Investors & Friends:
Welcome to this week’s Sundayreads. ?
Happy Dussehra! ?
As we gathered yesterday to celebrate Dussehra, we revelled not just in the vibrant effigies and fireworks, but in the profound symbolism of victory over evil. This festival, rooted deeply in Hindu mythology, marks the defeat of the demon king Ravana by Lord Rama, symbolizing the eternal battle between good and evil. For us today, this narrative transcends the mythological battlefield to reflect our personal and professional struggles against modern-day vices.
The ten heads of Ravana represent more than just physical form; they symbolize the ten evils within us—procrastination, fear, greed, jealousy, anger, arrogance, self-doubt, insensitivity, selfishness, and apathy.?These are the hurdles we face every day, the challenges that we must overcome to achieve true success and satisfaction in our lives.
Let us draw parallels from the story of Rama, who, with unwavering determination and moral integrity, overcame a formidable enemy. Similarly, in our careers as professionals and journeys as individuals, we encounter these metaphorical 'Ravanas'. Procrastination delays our goals, fear deters us from seizing new opportunities, and greed blinds us from ethical judgments. Overcoming these requires more than just will; it requires a Rama-like perseverance. ?
Consider the?evil of procrastination?in our professional lives—it's like the deceptive allure of Maricha, the golden deer, which distracts Rama away from his duties. Just as Rama learns to focus on what truly matters, we must prioritize our tasks to prevent enticing distractions from derailing our objectives.
Fear,?another pervasive evil, can paralyze us just as it did to the soldiers witnessing the immense power of Ravana on the battlefield. Yet, recalling Jambavan reminding Hanuman of his immense capabilities inspires us. Like Hanuman, we must remember our strengths and face challenges head-on.
?
In the sphere of personal finance,?greed?often tempts us to make imprudent decisions. This greed mirrors Ravana's lust for power and control, which ultimately leads to his downfall. As financial advisors, we encourage a balanced approach to investment, reminding clients that wisdom in decision-making leads to long-term prosperity, much like Rama's thoughtful approach to rescuing Sita and restoring order.
?
Jealousy?can corrode relationships and personal growth, much like the discord sown by Ravana among allies. Recognizing and celebrating others' successes can transform envy into inspiration.
?
Anger, unchecked, can lead to ruin, as it did for Ravana in his wrathful decisions. Practicing patience and empathy can quell this fiery adversary.
?
Arrogance,?Ravana's downfall, blinds us to our limitations. Humility, like Rama's respect for allies and enemies alike, opens us to learning and growth.
?
Self-doubt?stymies our potential. Remembering Rama’s reliance on his comrades' diverse strengths encourages us to trust in our capabilities and seek support when needed.
?
Insensitivity?to others' feelings breeds conflict, but understanding and kindness, as practiced by Rama, build bridges.
?
Selfishness?keeps us from seeing the bigger picture. A community-focused approach, as demonstrated by Rama’s rule, enriches everyone.
?
Apathy, the lack of concern or action, can be as destructive as any active vice. Engaging actively in our communities and careers, inspired by Rama's dedication, combats this inertia.
?
As we reflect on these stories, let us challenge ourselves to identify and conquer these vices. Each victory, no matter how small, is a step towards a more fulfilled and balanced life. This Dussehra, take a moment to acknowledge your battles, both won and ongoing. Recognize the Ravana within, and bolster your resolve to defeat these evils.
?
I invite you all to share your stories and reflections on how you have faced and fought your own Ravanas. What vices have you battled in your journey towards personal and professional fulfillment? How have the timeless virtues of courage, wisdom, and perseverance guided you through these challenges?
?
As we celebrate the victory of good over evil, let us commit to this path of continual self-improvement and ethical integrity. Let Dussehra not only be a festival of joy but also a celebration of the victories we achieve every day in our lives.
?
Warm Regards
