Picture caption: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his return to Bangladesh from Pakistan on 10th January 1972. The uprising in East Pakistan had come to a boil over the brutal killings by the Pakistani forces and the annulment of an election that Mujibur Rahman had won.The writing was without any partisan view whatever you notice, but I, a true writer, want to tell the truth of our glorious war.

( I translated?a Bangla version touchy true story?into English from pristine works of the book," Maa" ( mother) by our eminent female writer and freedom fighter, Ms Jahanara Begum,?I am also indebted to?writer Anisul Haq and new writer Ms Nazia ---, please read, I make sure you will have a different flavor from this fabulous piece of writing that tempted me to re--write,thanks---MinhajQuazi )

Safia Begum,a typical Bengali ideal mother. She was the wife of one of the most wealthy engineers of Dhaka named Mr.Younus at that time. The first child was born from her womb that was a girl. She affectionately kept her daughter's name 'Bindu' (In Bangla it is said--Dot.)The girl was the soul of her mother Safia begum. But it was an irony of fate that the girl died in an early age.Her mother broke down in griefs and sorrows. After sometimes later, Azad was born?in 1946.

Azad was a big fan of Elvis Presley. He used to hear songs, read books, and watch cinemas in Naz Cinema Hall with twelve anna tickets. Zayed was his cousin and liked a disciples of Azad. The mother Safia Begum loved her only son a lot. She used to feed him through her own hands.

Azad was growing up with the loves and affections of his family.

But, the happiness shuttered down soon when his father married to another woman who was the wife of his father's distance relative, a cousin and brought that woman in their home. After seeing it, Azad's mother left out from the palace with her son. She never went back to her husband's house. She was very self-willed and never forgave her husband for his demoralized activities. She had not shown her face to him till her death.

Gradually, Azad grew up and passed I.S.C level ( twelve- year education). By then, his father realized that it was impossible to take total control of his wife and son in his hands. He was trying to convince his wife and sent a proposal to her that he wanted to send Azad to Karachi University for higher study. Safia Begum was worried about her son, at that time Dhaka University was very louder with politics and fireballs. She was thinking, "Will my son be able to study here? If anything wrong happens what I will do? "After that Azad went to Karachi for higher study for the willingness of his mother.

In Karachi, Azad saw that how miserable discrimination was going on in the west Pakistan with the East Pakistan( now Bangladesh ). The 94% portions are allotted for the West Pakistan and rest of the only 4% are allotted for the neglected people of the East Pakistan. Azad realized that the West Pakistanis never accepted ourselves as their Muslim brotherhoods. When they got to know that Azad came from the East, ( before 1971 Pakistan had two parts, the West Pakistan, now it is, and the East Pakistan--now a glorious Bangladesh!) they started to do neglect him .Azad didn't feel comfortable here.He desired to go back his home, to his lovely country. He wrote a letter to his mother, "My beloved mother! Where I am staying now it is not my motherland. My home is there where you are."

Once completing his B.S.C, Azad came back?home after hearing the news of his mother's sickness. His mother was staying in a little rental house in Malibagh at that time.Azad realized that his mother was different from other women. The Ex-Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam ( a prominent writer, female warrior of Bangladesh) used to visit Azad's mother ,she noticed that Safia Begum looked very soft minded, but she never gave up her self respects in front of her husband and she strongly maintained it.

Suddenly the fearsome night came. The cruel 25th March's night in 1971.Azad saw the dangers and gruesomeness of that night. On that night the golden sons of our country's how miserably killed, no one could explain it in their words! The baby cried in the chest of her mother, but it didn't even know that her mother was no longer in the world. That night the animals also did not spare the children.

Come back to the point. After seeing the miserable moments of the war, Azad could not control his emotions. His faraway uncle gave him news about the tortures done by Pakistani Army. The roads, launch terminals, everywhere there were signs of gruesomeness of Pakistani army. They only wanted the blood of our Bengali people. Every midnight they brought many girls and women in Razarbag Police Line and tortured them as cruel animals. Azad's uncle had to stay there because he was a police man at that time. The Pakistani Army waited like hungry animals for the trucks when the trucks arrived here with captive girls and women. What happened after that no need to explanation......

The Bengali Police who were staying in Razarbag Police Line with Azad's uncle seemed like crying when they heard the? fearsome screaming?of young girls and women. Azad heard all of these?from his uncle and said to himself, "No! Let never this happen again. This cant be tolerated anymore!"

Mother Safia Begum could not control her tears after seeing the situations, the well wisher of her family the Jurain Peer ( a religious mentor) told her, "Women are being oppressed. The Pakistanis will be defeated in the war."

Azad and her mother always dreamt of a nice, peaceful and united country.

Suddenly, a freedom fighter Kazi Kamal appeared to Azad about his guerilla training. Azad determined that he would also go to liberation war. During the war, the freedom fighters and their weapons were to be used to hide in Azad's home. The martyred Jewel,Bacchu,Kazi Kamal and more heroes took shelter there when there?were no operations and shared the histories of their operations with Azad.He courageously told?them,"I will also go to war with you."

Azad knew that he was the only son of his mother, but he told?her mother,"Dear mother,if you give me permission I would like to go to the war."

Azad's mother didn't tell anything. She went to visit the Jurain Peer. The Peer told to her,"Let Azad go to war.He will surely come back to you again.Seeing the situation of the country,no one can seat at home idly."

Azad's mother got reassurance after hearing it.Next day she told?her son,"We have to liberate our country. You can go to war my son."

After getting permission from her mother,he went out for the liberation war.

The martyred jewel had an identity as a meritorious cricketer, light hearten man.He loved to do fun and shared jokes with his fellows for making them happier.During an operation he lost his three fingers from the shoots of the army. His fellows asked to him,"Is it paining a lot?"

He replied to them,"No,its comfortable for me.There is an amazing peacefulness to give blood for my country.I can say others that I have lost my fingers for my loving country."

Later, 'Shaheed Jewel Memorial Cricket Tournament was launched to commemorate this great freedom fighter.

In 29th august,1971,Azad and his friends were staying in Azad's house.Suddenly the Pakistani army ambushed the house when everyone was asleep. They took over Shaheed Azad including Shaheed Jewel and others.Only Kazi Kamal could escape from there.

Azad's mother saw that how cruelly the Pakistani army picked his beloved son up in their jeep by beating him continuously. She could not tolerate the pain and became senseless after doing a shout. The incident's news was spread to the Bengali valiant soldier Major Hayder and he was shocked and cried loudly, "My boys!My boys"

Where the martyr Azad was imprisoned in jail, the martyr Rumi, his little brother Jamy and his father Sharif Imam ( all three were eminent writer Jahanara Imam's two sons and the last one husband) were also along with him there. After a while the Pakistani army came and beaten and tortured them brutally.Azad didn't tell anything. Once they called Azad and asked to him,"If your mother allows, will you tell everything?"

Azad nodded his head.

After that,A Pakistani military along with a rajakar ( Banagali tritor)went to Azad's house to meet with his mother. The conversations were like :

"Are you Azad's Mother?"

Mother replied,"Yes."

"Tomorrow please come to visit your son in Ramna Police Station and tell him to share everything with us.If it is,we will leave your son.Alright?"

Mother replied again,"Yes."

The next day,she went to meet with her beloved son.She noticed that there were a lots of tortured marks on his face. She was crying inside but never let it understand to him otherwise his son will be hurt.Azad said to her,"Mother,I have not eaten rice till two days. Please when you come tomorrow bring rice for me, I want to eat handmade?rice of yours."

Mother asked him,"Did you tell anything about your fellows with them?"

Azad replied,"No.They beat me a lot, but I never told a single word."

The Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam said to her son,"Go my son.I have sacrificed you for the country. " But Safia Begum could not tell anything like that to Azad,he was the apple of her eyes, his only son, her life. But she didn't express her emotions and said to Azad,"When they beat you, please be strong. Don't tell anything with them."

The next day,she again went to meet her son with her handmade rice, but she didn't find him.She searched for him a lot everywhere but didn't get any trace. At a time, our country became independent. Everyone was telling that Azad was died as a martyred in the liberation war.But mother's mind never accepted it.She was sure that Azad might be come back to her.Even the Jurain Peer ( religious mentor) ensured her, "Azad will come back."

Thus,on 30 August,1985 she died waiting for her son Azad.It was?14 years and 1 day ago when Azad was abducted by the armies.

In these 14 years, she didn't eat rice for a once. She lived on bread soaked with water but didn't touch rice.Because his beloved son's last wish she could not fulfill.

She lied on the ground without any bed.Because she saw that her apple of eyes how miserably stayed in the jail.

Before her death, she said to his nephew Zayeed, "Please remember to write only '???? ?????? ??' on my grave nothing else."

Many said to use her husband's name, but Zayeed kept the last desire of his aunt.If you visit Jurain Graveyard you will find her grave which named with white marble "???? ?????? ??"

We should salute to those sons and mothers who have dedicated their lives?for our country.

Minhaj, I loved the story of Azad. It is clearly a metaphor for the suffering (childhood), bravery, warfare( the growing up years), and, finally, the independence (mature adulthood) of Bangladesh.
