Vice President Kamala Harris Speaks with BELatina About Recently Launched Nationwide Initiative

Nicole Oropesa, EVP of Programming, BrandStar Entertainment

BELatina, a leading cultural lifestyle destination elevating the voice of the modern Latina, and a BrandStar Entertainment platform, recently had the unprecedented honor of conducting a one-on-one interview with Vice President Kamala Harris to discuss the recently launched national initiative, ‘Fight for Our Freedoms College Tour.’

The Vice President spoke with Guisell Gómez, Editor-In-Chief for BELatina News, touching on a broad range of topics, including how young Latino students can influence the nation’s future.

Meaningful insights from the Vice President’s far-reaching interview with Guisell included:

?? “When we think about, for example, the economy, Latinos are helping to lead around the growth of new small businesses, and Latinas within that population are taking the lead.”?

? “Latinos are starting businesses faster than anybody. I mean, one in four of all new businesses are started by Latinos.”?

These two statements from Vice President Harris are a testament to the growing influence of the Latino business community and particularly meaningful to Latinas between the ages of 25-44, who account for 92% of BELatina’s audience.?

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, I am happy to know that BELatina was singled out by the White House as an interview channel for Vice President Harris. Additionally, I am proud of BELatina’s Editor-in-Chief, Guisell Gómez, who truly signifies the exponentially growing reach of young Latinas.

Guisell’s remarkable journey is a testament to how transformative the immigration experience can be for some people in the United States. Looking for a better future after being exposed to effects of Pablo Escobar’s violence in Medellín, her family found refuge in the vibrant heart of Miami, Florida. It was here that Guisell embarked on her mission to rewrite the narrative for Latinas and other marginalized groups in the United States – but it came with plenty of struggles, as is the case for many immigrants.

Nevertheless, today Guisell is currently Editor-In-Chief of BELatina and Associate Director of Content Marketing for BrandStar Entertainment.

"Historically, Latinas haven't gotten a seat at important tables,” Gómez says about the importance of the work she does at BELatina and BrandStar. “For a long time, we were limited to our stereotypes – some examples include 'the help' and anything administrative. But things are changing. We are leading conversations and movements; we are also making more decisions than ever. We are the new majority."

By securing opportunities such as engaging with Vice President Kamala Harris, Guisell believes that progress is being made for Latinas everywhere. Yet, she understands that a lot of this progress starts with getting access to information and resources.?

During her phone conversation with Vice President Harris, she was able to touch upon important issues concerning the Latino youth. Vice President Harris emphasized critical role of the Latino community in economic growth as well. She noted, "When we think about, for example, the economy, Latinos are helping to lead around the growth of new small businesses, and Latinas within that population are taking the lead.

As the fastest-growing demographic in the United States, the Latino community is not one to be ignored.

“Latinos are starting businesses faster than anybody. I mean, one in four of all new businesses are started by Latinos," the Vice President added.

It brings me a lot of joy to my heart to have been able to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month alongside Guisell. As a Latina myself, it brings me pride to see the success of a young, professional Latina in this industry – and get opportunities such as interviewing the Vice President. I’m hoping our community can continue to be tapped in beyond this month.
