Not vibing with people at work: how to understand it and move forward?
We've all been there—working with someone you just can't seem to connect with. You have different approaches, communicate in different ways, and prioritise different things. Despite trying your best to ‘gel’, the struggle remains. And over time, tension starts to build and you find yourself in a place of conflict in the relationship.
Most of the time, conflict in the workplace is down to the fact we all have different personalities and so we all look at things differently, interpret situations differently and offer different strengths to the workplace. Our personalities are what makes us all unique and are our superpower! So how can you move forward with that person you struggle with?
By learning about and using the personality tool, DiSC.?
I have spoken about DiSC before, and there is a reason why I love it so much.?
DiSC is a personality profiling tool that has helped many individuals, teams and organisations, both big and small, improve their teamwork, communication and overall productivity.?
The tool has four personality profiles:?
?? Dominance?
?? Influence?
?? Steadiness?
?? Compliance?
We tend to be a combination of all four personality styles, and we may have higher preferences to some of the styles over others. This isn’t about putting you into a box.
By understanding yourself better through completing your DiSC profile, it will help you understand your personality preferences, and we become more self-aware of how we communicate and react in certain situations - our patterns, our triggers and our behaviours. And this is helpful. The more self-aware we are, the better prepared we can be for interactions and situations at work - or at home. It can also help you with looking for clues in others, what their personality preferences may be and you start to understand others better, and the pieces of the ‘people puzzle’ start to make better sense!
Here is a top tip for you. If you are struggling with someone at work who is cool, calm and maybe a bit hard to read, try to get a 1-to-1 conversation with them. Go into it with warmth, a genuinely curious mindset and collaborative intent. And see what happens…!
