If you’ve been vibing your way through code with AI, buckle up—because debugging just got a whole lot messier, all thanks to vibe coding.

Vibe coding, a term popularised by Andrej Karpathy, is all about focusing on the idea rather than the code itself. Sounds awesome, right? But as more people jump in without fully understanding what’s under the hood, debugging has surfaced as the real challenge.

With AI churning out massive chunks of code, developers are realising that vibe coding without solid debugging skills is like signing up for disaster.

Vibe debugging is a nightmare; it is 10 times more frustrating than regular debugging. Since AI-generated code doesn’t help form a mental map of how data flows, fixing bugs becomes a never-ending loop of trial and error.

Moreover, let’s not forget the issue of AI over-engineering everything. As one developer noted, “AI doesn’t simplify code—it just adds and adds and adds.” With Spookghetti Code, Vibeghetti Code, and Server Meltdowns, the internet is having a field day.

Even Karpathy himself admitted that vibe coding is fine for throwaway weekend projects, but not so much for serious or complex work.?

With AI-generated code flooding the industry, debugging skills are now more critical than ever. Notably, there’s some solid data to back it up—the debugging and error detection segment is set to grow at 24.2% CAGR by 2030.

Security researchers at Pillar Security have uncovered a sneaky new supply chain attack vector called the Rules File Backdoor—a clever technique that allows hackers to inject hidden malicious instructions into AI-generated code.

Hackers are messing with AI by embedding malicious prompts in rule files. When a developer starts coding, the AI assistant, unknowingly influenced by the compromised rule, generates insecure or backdoored code.

The attack combines multiple techniques:

  • Context manipulation – Slightly altering AI outputs to include vulnerabilities
  • Unicode obfuscation – Hiding malicious instructions using invisible characters
  • Semantic hijacking – Using linguistic tricks to mislead the AI

AI Coding Tools Won’t Fix This for You

AI coding assistants aren’t taking responsibility for these vulnerabilities. Instead, they’re placing security on the user.

As researchers warn, traditional code review is no longer enough. AI has introduced an entirely new class of attacks, and developers must step up their security game.
