VFX exodus due to the writer's strike?
With a heavy heart, I see brilliant artists being forced to look elsewhere due to the changing landscape in the creative / film and VFX industry due to the ongoing writers and actors strike. Yes, I feel solidarity with writers and actors who want better deals.
But in the VFX industry, we often don't even get room in the credits in the end.
In my day job as a Texture supervisor with the current landscape, I fear the day when we do get back to normal and the strike is over and we have to once again crew up for the demand on shows currently paused. Some artists might have switched industries completely, It's going to be like right after COVID again!
With that in mind when artists are between jobs it's even more crucial to use the time to upskill and possibly learn a complementary skill.
On my YouTube channel, I have now launched a new introduction to Mari series for new texture artists. But if you are a seasoned artist in another discipline you might want to pick up a new discipline.
The first couple of chapters will be targeting Mari non-commercial as it's free. I feel that's extra important with the state of things at the moment. Later on I will use commercial Mari and more complicated assets as well as plugins such as Mari Extension pack. When Mari 7 is launched I will also cover the updates.
The project can be downloaded from my gumroad and you can also ask questions on the meshmen studio discord.

1 年I am beefing up my knowledge on Substance Designer. As a texture artist in film reading job posts for games texture artists, Substance Designer always seems to be the missing link to get taken seriously.
