Vetsplaining (verb)
War for talent, in the line of fire, war room, in the trenches, and other military expressions are often used in corporate settings. As a result, some people seem to think they can relate to the experiences of someone who actually served. This has inspired me to create some new words and I will share these new words on Wednesdays just to create a few laughs.
Vetsplaining (verb): When an individual, typically not affiliated with the military, attempts to impart their unsolicited wisdom and advice on matters pertaining to military service, often without any relevant experience or understanding. This phenomenon can occur when a person hears that someone is considering joining the military and feels compelled to share their unrelated experiences or opinions, without acknowledging the unique challenges and sacrifices faced by service members and veterans. It is akin to a civilian attempting to explain the intricacies of combat or military life to someone who has actually lived it. So, the next time you encounter a non-veteran who tries to compare their unrelated experiences to military service, you can be sure that you're witnessing a prime example of "veteransplaining."
A classic example of a vetsplainer (noun) is the person who begins by saying “I almost joined the military but…” That’s like saying you almost won the lottery by buying a ticket with none of the right numbers. ?

9 个月You just made me think of my late mother in law. She was a vetsplainer. Her brothers were Korean and Vietnam Era veterans and so, of course, she knew all about the military. My husband and his brother were Cold Warriors, do different experiences. She didn't try that with me, thank goodness.
