Veteran's employment challenges

Veteran's employment challenges

The 11th of November was National Veteran Day in the United States.

I would like to use this "stage" on LinkedIn to address an incredibly common issue most veterans face when returning to society: employment issues.

Being a veteran of the Israeli Defense Force, I experienced long periods of unemployment and difficulty obtaining and keeping a job that matched my skills and needs. I also had difficulty finding employers who understood what I was struggling with.

Most veterans find the transition from military and high-risk environments to civilian life difficult and face many challenges and one of the biggest is finding suitable employment.

While veterans leave the army with a set of skills that employers seek, such as loyalty, problem solving, leadership, ethics, and time management.

Some veterans find it difficult to get along with their coworkers. Returning veterans may find civilian attitudes challenging after years of discipline and precision. Everyone is different, and it is best to understand the specific needs of each person. Some rise in high-stress, demanding jobs, while others may collapse.

Additionally, some veterans are ashamed to reveal that they served in the military for fear of being stigmatized at the work place, make them feel comfortable and leave it up to them what and when they want to share.

CEO's and HR managers, I urge you to recruit veterans into your company and grow with them. You will discover dedicated workers who have much to give.

I would like to mention some worldwide organizations that help army veterans find a proper job and reclaim their lives:

Military-Civilian: Hot Jobs and Careers for Veterans and Their Families Veterans Affairs Canada / Anciens Combattants Canada Veteran Jobs Opportunities Veteran Mentor Network Veterans Career Board Department of Labor Veterans’ Employment and Training Service Veteran Jobs Opportunities Brothers for Life - Achim La'Chaim
