Veterans' Day Tribute: Honoring Service Through Music
Dear Friends,
Today, as we observe Veterans' Day, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible service and sacrifices made by our military veterans. ???? This day holds special meaning for me, as I’m proud to share that my father served in the military. He was a Sergeant in the Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict, and his dedication to our country has always been a source of pride for our family.
I know many of you have family members—parents, spouses, or close friends—who have also served in the military. Their commitment to protecting our freedoms and keeping our country safe is something we can never take for granted. ????
In our family, led by my father, we’ve always had a deep love for Duke Ellington and his timeless music. ?? If I had to pick an "official" soundtrack for the military, I’d choose his compositions, especially his Army theme song. But one piece that stands out in particular is Ellington’s suite Black, Brown, and Beige," which debuted in 1943 at Carnegie Hall. This masterpiece was Ellington’s way of telling the story of African Americans in the United States, including their vital contributions to our military history. It’s a profound tribute to those who served and sacrificed, and it captures the resilience, strength, and history of our country.
On this Veterans' Day, I invite you to think about the military veterans in your life. What song or piece of music would you choose to honor them? ?? How do you show your respect and gratitude to those who have served? Whether it’s a simple gesture, a song, or a moment of silence, let’s all take a moment today to reflect and offer our heartfelt thanks to the men and women who made our freedom possible.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on how you salute the military and the music that resonates with you and your family. Please share with me in the comments or by replying to this email.
