If you're like me, I'm often blown away with the sacrifices that Veterans and active military members displayed and currently display. My thoughts turned to them on many occasions this past weekend.
There's my friend Paul who served in the Marines in Vietnam. He's heavily committed to fitness, a fine golfer and a doting grandfather. He is revered by many and he reminded his friends on Friday about the birthday (11/10/1775) and the birthplace for the Marines (Tun Tavern in Philadelphia).
My friend Mark went to college on a ROTC scholarship and served thereafter in the Navy. His father and brothers also served in the military. His dad had a booming voice and he'd give you a bear hug so tight you would be gasping for air. Mark is appreciative of his military past and the way it shaped him into who he is today.
My wife's grandfather "Poppy" was an engineer in World War II. He helped build bridges in key European areas. One of his sons was born during the War and he didn't get to meet him until his son was 2. He loved Cubs baseball and a shot and a beer at 5PM. His family loved him dearly.
My high school friend Frank and his family moved from San Diego to Maryland right before his freshman year. He served in the Navy like his dad. Although I don't see him often, we never skip a beat when our group does get together.
There's the pastor at a local Church that served as the chaplain in the Iraqi War. He went on to do prison ministry and became a colonel about 10 years ago. I'm always humbled when he asks those that served and those currently serving to come to the front of the Church to be recognized.

The VA loan program was established shortly after WWII to help servicemembers be come homeowners. Low to no down payment, no private mortgage insurance and reduced closing costs are some of the features to VA loans. VA loans have come a long way since their implementation. They are confusing to some in the real estate industry and I'm one to advocate for the Veteran or the active servicemember. Inventory is tight. Home sellers may pass on a VA loan offer in favor of something else. Before they do, a reminder of their sacrifices should be factored into the decision making process.
