Veteran's Day - a reflection

That's my Mom on the left. Home on leave visiting her folks. Her Dad is with her. Grandma's probably taking the picture.
She was a farm girl from Wisconsin who grew up during the depression. The family scraped by. She wanted an education and to see the world. World War II invaded everyone's lives. She joined the WACs - the Womens' Army Corps. She had medical secretary skills, so she worked for a doctor in charge of a field hospital in England.
After the war, she went to university on the GI Bill. She got her bachelor's quickly, testing out of some classes, and with the remaining funds got her MSW - master's in social work. She worked throughout her life at Adoption Agencies, Social Service organizations, and as a Psychiatric Social Worker at a State Hospital.
At her funeral, the funeral director stepped forward and handed me a neatly folded flag, and said, "On behalf of the President and grateful nation, thank you." It sill brings tears to my eyes. Even now.
Thanks Mom, for protecting our freedoms. Thank you Veterans everywhere. I am part of a grateful nation.
Thanks for sharing. What a great and inspiring story.

2 年My grandmother and grandfather were both Marines. I have a framed photo of them in their early 20s in their uniforms. It’s one of my most treasured possessions. Thank you for sharing your story. You brought tears to my eyes, too. - Grateful and blessed
