On This Veterans Day
My Thoughts On Veterans Day
On October 23, 1983, stationed on the aircraft carrier USS America (CV-66). We were spending a few days in Portsmouth England. While my shipmates and I were on liberty in the British pubs, a suicide bomber ran into the Marine barracks in Beirut Lebanon. The blast killed 241 U.S. military personnel. This would be the deadliest single day death toll for the U.S. Marines since Iwo Jima. The America quickly recalled the crew back to the ship. We weighed anchor and swiftly sailed to the Mediterranean in support efforts.
While the America was sitting just off the coast of Lebanon, I realized three things. I was in minimal danger; I had a bed to sleep in, and ate three hot meals per day. At the same time, a recovery effort of pulling human remains from the ruble was taking place just a few miles away. This was a stark contrast to my world on the USS America.
Yes, I am a veteran and I am so very proud to have served this great country but there have been so many, many more that have put themselves in harm’s way and have paid a far higher price for their service.
I sincerely give THANKS to all that have served and will never forget those that gave the ultimate sacrifice.
