Transportation industry tips, market insights and tools developed to make you a more effective logistics professional.
Each year on November 11, Americans pause to honor and thank the veterans who have fought for our country.?
Veterans Day is a federal holiday, meaning nearly all state-run offices — and some public businesses — close for the day.?
While non-retail holidays don’t have a huge impact on the trucking industry as a whole, oversize freight transportation usually has additional restrictions around holidays.
Anderson Trucking Service (ATS) is veteran-founded and veteran-owned, so we take this holiday seriously. We also move freight nationwide, and our experience has taught us the value of understanding holiday restrictions for oversize (OS) and overweight (OW) freight hauling.?
Below, you’ll find a list of all states implementing restrictions on OSOW freight travel on and around Veterans Day 2024.?
You’ll also find a list of all 50 states’ online holiday restriction calendars (or a comparable resource) to refer back to throughout the year.?
As always, the best source for up-to-date information about freight hauling restrictions is the Department of Transportation (DOT) website for the state(s) on your route. The lists below are provided for your convenience.?
Which States Have Permit Office Closures and Travel Restrictions Over Veterans Day 2024?
Most state offices — usually including permit offices — are closed on federal holidays, or operating with very limited staff.
This Veterans Day, only Wisconsin’s permit office has explicitly stated it will be open.?
All others either stated they will be closed or have not made public their holiday office hours, but would presumably be closed in observance of the legal state holiday.?
Use our state-by-state list of holiday travel calendars below to confirm permit office closures in the states on your route. They will be the most accurate and timely reflection of each office’s hours.?
With that said, far fewer states have holiday travel restrictions for OSOW freight on Veterans Day. Unlike the Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays, Veterans Day is not considered a high travel day, and therefore less restrictions are required.?
The following states have OSOW freight travel restrictions in place for Veterans Day 2024:
Kentucky: Any restrictions will be noted on the permit.
New Hampshire: No OSOW travel allowed on 11/11.
Rhode Island: No OSOW travel allowed starting 30 minutes after sunset on 11/10 until 30 minutes before sunrise on 11/12.

?Plan Ahead Before Shipping Permitted Loads
Remember: Each state sets its own regulations for oversize/overweight (OSOW) freight hauling that are in place all year round. Talk with your transportation provider about their route plan and any necessary permits before your freight leaves its point of origin.
Transporting an oversize load without proper permits will result in fees and delays. Fortunately, you can easily avoid hassles and lost time along your route by planning ahead.?
Before you set out with a load of over-dimensional freight, consult the Freight Shipping Calendar. This free, downloadable resource will help ensure you only ship on the best, most budget-friendly (and holiday-hassle-free) days each month.
