Thank you for your service

thing is?

looking back

you never have better friends

a clearer sense of purpose

even amidst all the snafus – and worse

it is

like dickens wrote

the best and worst of times

sleeping in the cold

pressed against fellow soldiers?

in a space too small

counting on your guard?

to guard you

and then being with each other

after an attack?

then later

remembering still?

lives that could not be saved

from a past event

now fused into present

staying in country?

just long enough?

that going home

also means leaving home

being greeted by veterans?

from yesterday’s wars?

“welcome home soldier”?

it never leaves you
